33. How do they feel about the unknown?

zereshk: nerve-wracking! please please just tell them things they need to know. but if they don't need to know it then it doesn't really matter

condelura: it excites her!! the idea of there always being more to learn is exhilarating, she wants to know all she can but she’s glad there’s a lot she doesn’t know, too.

sully: frustrating! he really just wants to know shit! but also the less he knows is possibly more promising, in a sense. but he’d much rather just know shit!

44. How do they hold onto people?

zereshk: with everything they have

condelura: tightly but hesitantly. she’s not used to caring for other people yet

sully: he tries not to

55. How has your character’s mental health been recently?

zereshk: mixed! it feels nice for them to participate in something they feel decent at and don’t feel like they’re stepping on toes. they’re scared of being depended on, though, and people have wanted to give them responsibility lately which is terrifying for them

condelura: mostly good! better than ever honestly. she’s not in the game anymore but she’s exploring. she’s a little bit lonely, i think, but happy to discover and learn new things, so loneliness is at the back of her mind and doesn’t bother her too much :>

What is it? Also known as zereshk, barberries are edible fruit, about the same size as a blueberry. It tastes very citrusy, and is usually dried, where it takes on a raisin- or craisin-like appearance. Barberries are used in Persian cooking as well as in medieval Europe. The bushes grow between 3 and 8 feet tall (1-3 meters) and the leaves turn a purplish red (as pictured above) in the fall. In spring and summer, they are a bright, waxy green.

Why don’t more people grow barberries? Quite a few people actually do grow these vitamin C bombs, though not for food. They’re common decorative plants you’d be able to find in most nurseries and garden centers, usually chosen for their fall color. Some security-conscious gardeners will plant them under windows, too — for the same reason barberries are commercially available: the bars. Barberries have wickedly sharp and long thorns (0.5″–2″) that run across the branches. You can see a couple in the picture. They hurt!

Why should you include it in your story? Unlike lemons and oranges, Barberries are suited to cold and dry climates, meaning that your story can have the citrus tang without your characters being rich and without importation featuring heavily in your story. Additionally, barberries fruit in late fall and winter. Give your character some fresh fruit on their snowy walk over the mountains, use it to explain away how people are still alive in the magically-created 100-year-winter, or save a character from starving to death when they can’t afford food in January.

4. if they could learn one spell that isn’t available to them at present, which spell would it be?

sully: off of gut instinct i’m gonna say i think it’d be funny if sully knew speak with animals. like the prophet suleiman dhdbcjncldkj

zereshk: zereshk isn’t a magic user but oh fuckin BOY they would cast calm emotions all the time if they could (mostly for themselves)

38. what do they smell like?

sully: somehow i feel like sully would smell a little like rose and honeysuckle! i tried to think of a longer answer, but that felt right for some reason. maybe he’s picked up some perfume.

zereshk: i think that with their trunk, they’d be very hyper-aware of how they smell, and would try to minimize it as much as possible so it wouldn’t be distracting to themselves and others. but while probably only abstinence (and zilla, briefly) could smell it, i do think they smell very very faintly of sandalwood.

38. how would they describe their party members?

sully: i think i would probably just end up rephrasing what i wrote here gfldkjkg but the short version is that, if asked about any party member, sully would probably go, “oh [x]? they’re great. very capable in battle. i don’t know them that well but they seem nice. also unfortunately we both know the answer but are they ok”

zereshk: hmmm......i zereshk would describe zilla as someone who can be very caring, but doesn’t like to think of herself as caring; maggy as someone who is bubbly and energetic but by no means naive or shallow; and shep as someone they can relate to in a way they can’t describe, but simultaneously the party member they feel the most distant with.
