I think that a large part of that definitely comes from his demeanour. Having had the story of The Outsiders thrust upon us when I was in middle school, I can see how a lot of people would imagine Bakura as a stereotypical greaser-type character. Then there's also that some people just have a kink for smoking, haha. Sort of like how neither Ryou or Bakura have never canonically had any vision problems noted, but people still draw them with glasses for the sake of attractiveness~
That’s what I’m thinking it is, tbh ^^; he kinda... looks and acts like a smoker to people, I guess? But yeah, people are definitely free to interpret/represent characters with whatever headcanons they want :D
In response to your posts about Bakura being a smoker: In canon, I can't see it tbh. But in my defence, the art I made of him smoking isn't IC, it's actually from a Werewolf AU I started and never did anything with. In the AU Bakura's village was killed by werewolves in the 1900's, not burned to death in Ancient Egypt :')

Tbh I don’t really feel good bad or indifferent about the choice to make Bakura a smoker, I just found it really interesting that a lot of people seem to HC him as a smoker, be it canon-timeline, post-canon, or AU ^^
