Zack’s mouth twisted into a frown as he examined the other boy. There was a red mark blooming across his left cheekbone, and split along his bottom lip. His insides sank. Despite his desperation to do so, he knew there was nothing he could say to bring back the light in those puppy-dog brown eyes, or the bright smile that’s long since taken up a permanent residence in his head. At that point, it was simply a waiting game.
