The idea of Frankenstein terrified me as a child. My grandmother took me to a showing of "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" and I was so scared we left the theatre. But by the time high school rolled around I was ready to tackle it again. I had to write a paper on some great work of literature so I chose Frankenstein. My topic- comparing the book to Mary Shelley's life. (spoiler alert- there is a LOT to unpack there and she really didn't like herself very much)

My guide through all of this was the library's copy of "The Annotated Frankenstein" with notes by Leonard Wolf.

Y'all. When I say I was transported... I had no idea of the depth of feeling, the breadth of story- this book is amazing on its own, but the annotations brought it to another level.

And I got a C on the paper (turned it in late). Turned in the exact same paper in college and got an A, so I got that going for me.

As an adult I had my steampunk phase and found Steampunk: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Obviously the story is the same, but the illustrations by Zdenko Basic and Manuel Sumberac are GORGEOUS. Highly recommend.
