megzag is so complex and tense because her current assignment is to stop you, so you're essentially coworkers. every time you beat her, you're proving that she's not good enough at her job, but dating her lessens that insult, and giving her nectar is the same tension but in an affectionate package.
for melnem, the tension is the reward. you are doing the same thing at the same time, like a race, like a true rivalry. when you compete, you're proving that she deserves to be out here and that she can keep up with you. If she becomes the variant act 1 boss, she will have ascended to that role, proven that she is worthy to test you, and rewarded for your rivalry.
megaera is weakened and demeaned by your fights. nemesis is improved by them, but she's still so angy about it.
also she's like 5x as likely to kabedon wall slam you, maybe with her sword against your throat.
