Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and North Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev have been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize by the leader of the EU parliament Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group Udo Bullmann, of the Greens/European Free Alliance (EFA) Ska Keller and of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Gabbi Zimmer.
According to exclusive information the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) secured on Saturday, a joint statement signed by all three, it is stressed that âthe Prespes Agreement between Greece and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia puts an end to a log-lasting dispute and brings stability to the western Balkan region.â
The three leaders noted that the Prespes Agreement, which has been ratified by the parliaments of both countries, is âa model for peacefully resolving international problems through dialogue and mutual compromise. Prime Ministers Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras had the political courage to go ahead with the agreement despite the nationalist opposition.â

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) state-run MIA news agency on Friday changed comments attributed to Prime Minister Zoran Zaev after an intervention by Athens.
In an interview with MIA in Washington, Zaev reportedly said: âThe northern part of Greece is Greece, the western part of Bulgaria is Bulgaria. This is our Macedonia and there will not be another one in the world,â MIA initially reported him as saying. However, MIA later completely changed the quote.
The revised quote read: âWe all know that today a part of the geopolitical region of Macedonia is in Greece, a part is in Bulgaria, and the northern part is in our country. And no one will ever try to deny our Macedonia. The adjective âNorthâ makes a distinction and we reaffirm that there are regions in Bulgaria and in Greece which are called Macedonia.â
In Greece, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his junior coalition partner Panos Kammenos appeared to have buried the hatchet, at least for now, after recent tension between the two men over the name deal.
