cheesy new years kiss story
yeet this is short, fluffy, and kinda poorly written but enjoy!!
warnings: none

Race leaned over the railing, eyes scanning the sea of buildings that expanded for miles in every direction around him. Â The cold, Winter air bit at his cheeks and the back of his neck, but he paid no mind to it. Â Something about it was calming. Â He felt at peace, having escaped the noise of the New Years party that was taking place in Jack and Katherineâs apartment downstairs. Â He loved his friends and enjoyed when they were together, of course, but sometimes it got a little overwhelming.
He wasnât sure how long heâd been on the roof, lost in thought, but he couldnât bring himself to rejoin the party. Â Something about the city was calling to him tonight.
âYou okay?â A voice from the roof entrance startled Race, but he didnât turn around.
âYeah,â He said, eyes not leaving the scene in front of him. Â Lights swam in his vision, emanating from other buildings rooftops. Â Sounds from the street below bled into his field of conscious and he allowed his eyes to fall to the ground, hundreds of feet below. Â The cars looked minuscule from the distance and Race had to remind himself that there were people in them, lost in their own little lives. Â As he heard a cheer in the distance, Race couldnât help but feel incredibly small, reminded suddenly that he was only one person in a world of billions. Â There was something comforting about that- knowing that his story was only one in an ongoing series of existence. Â That while his experiences were unique to him, it wasnât unique that he was experiencing them.
âWhatâre you thinking about?â Albert asked, leaning over the railing, next to Race, wordlessly handing him an already open beer.
Race shrugged, âA lot of things, I guess.â
Albert hummed, taking a sip of his own beer, âAnything bad?â
Race shook his head, âNo, not bad. Â Just,â he paused, raising his bottle to his lips, taking a thoughtful drink, âLost in my head a bit.â
They lapsed back into silence, both men drinking in the night, minds wandering separately. Â
âDo you remember in high school,â Albert began softly, âwhen all we wanted to get outta the city and go to Cali?â
âYeah,â Race chuckled, glancing sideways at his best friend, breath catching slightly in his throat when he saw how the light shimmered in his eyes, lighting them up more than usual, âAll we wanted to do was run away.â
Albert kept his gaze trained on the city as he answered, âI donât know why I ever wanted to leave.â
âWe were kids,â Race stated, âOur lives were shit and we associated them with the city. Â We wanted out.â âYeah,â Albert breathed, âGlad we stayed, though,â he took another drink, âI can finally appreciate the beauty of this place.â
Albert finally met Raceâs stare, âIâm glad we stayed, too,â Race agreed.
They stayed, lost in each others eyes, until the muffled sound of counting could be heard from below.
âWeâre gonna miss the countdown,â Albert said, although he was already leaning in.
âI donât care,â Race muttered, closing his eyes as the countdown reached â1â.
Then their lips met softly, tame fireworks exploding in Raceâs chest. Â They fit together like a puzzle, tilting their heads opposite ways in order to deepen the kiss. Â Race felt Albertâs hand cradle the back of his head, pulling him in closer and he rest a hand on Albertâs waist in response. Â The world muted around them and they kissed for what could have been hours before pulling apart.
Race kept his eyes closed, drinking in the warmth of Albertâs body.
âHappy New Year, Racer,â Albert whispered, pressing another brief kiss to Raceâs lips.
âHappy New Year.â
