Pre-workout myths that need to be put to rest, honestly
i've been in fitness spaces long enough to collect a truly impressive number of wrong beliefs about pre-workout. so let's do this.
π« "pre-workout is only for serious gym people" it is not. if you move your body with intention β running, cycling, lifting, whatever β a good pre-workout supports that effort. you don't have to be competitive to benefit from better performance nutrition.
π« "the tingling means it's low quality / dangerous" the tingling is beta-alanine doing exactly what it's supposed to do. it's a harmless nerve sensation. it's not an allergy. it's not a warning sign. it's called paresthesia and it has been studied extensively.
π« "it's just caffeine in a fancy container" a properly formulated pre-workout has functional ingredients beyond caffeine. citrulline for blood flow. creatine for power output. BCAAs for muscle protection. taurine for focus. caffeine is one part of a system.
π« "you'll become dependent on it and won't be able to train without it" caffeine creates tolerance, not dependence in the clinical sense. you can manage this by cycling off every few weeks. the other ingredients have no addictive properties.
π« "it causes bloating" some formulas do because of ingredient quality or fillers. clean, fast-absorbing formulas typically don't. if yours causes bloating, it might be a formula issue, not a category issue.
π« "it's not necessary if you eat well" diet is foundational, agreed. but pre-workout ingredients like creatine and citrulline provide benefits that food alone doesn't really replicate in training-relevant doses. they're complementary, not competing.
okay i feel better now. anything you've heard that I missed?
