“On Friday, June 19th, the SK classes had a special visitor, the Rainbow Lady, Janet Nezon from Rainbow Plate™. She was invited by Seeds for Change Gardens, who have been helping our SK classes set up their vegetable garden in the ELC play area. Janet talked about how she LOVED rainbows and how she enjoyed eating them too! She and our young students had a very interesting discussion about the importance of eating food with different colours. However, did that mean having Fruit Loops, cookies with rainbow sprinkles, or different colour candy? NO!!! Jane slowly revealed how fruit and vegetables come in different colours of the rainbow and that they make you feel wonderful and get all 5 senses excited! She brought a variety of produce to show the students and even introduced them to a few that they had never seen before, such as the chayote, which looked like a muppet face! They also showed some familiar fruit and vegetables and she asked them to touch and smell them too.
After the discussion on the floor, the students went to workstations organized by colour. At each table, there were a variety of fruit and vegetables of the same colour. They were encouraged to taste them. There were familiar ones such as corn, apples and grapes but also some unique things such as purple cabbage, chayote, and Asian pear. The students also received a paper plate with the chant "Rainbow Plate, Rainbow Plate, Tell me the colours that you ate!" Once the students tried the fruit and vegetables of a particular colour, they stamped their plate with the corresponding bingo dauber. At the end of the session, they had a colourful plate to remind them of their wonderful rainbow experience!”
