So...this whole YouTube issue...
Yes, I know, it’s been around for weeks by now, but it doesn’t hurt to speak up about it now!
If don’t know by now, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has fined YouTube $170 million for tracking kid’s data. The FTC now wants to use COPPA to protect kids on the internet (well, they’ve been trying to do that since 1998), especially on Youtube. This is where the rules they want to place start to be...eh, you’ll see.
The FTC wants to place some rules on YouTube by January 2020 on “kid-friendly content”. For example, if you, per say, mark your video as “for kids”, but it’s clearly not, you get fined $42,000. And that’s per video. Imagine all the misunderstanding of what each one of your videos would fall into what category, making you get fined to over $1 million if you have more than 24 videos that all fall into their mindset of looking like kid’s content. It’s all ridiculous, really.
Then, you have the rules that make something “kid-friendly”, from having animated characters to bright colors to the type of music playing to popular characters and many more rules. This could put these types of YouTubers in danger: Animators, Minecrafters, Gamers, and really a lot more Youtubers.
First, we had the problem with things being too adult-like and getting demonetized, making people lose revenue on videos they worked hard on. Now, people are still getting demonetized, just with videos seeming to be “kid-friendly”, and this could make people lose up to 90% of their revenue, and it could lead to Youtubers losing money, then losing the job they’ve had for years. All of us will lose hope.
I guess what I’m saying is that we need to take action. This might not even blow up here on Tumblr, but to anyone who sees this, please, speak out. I have the link here for the FTC page in which you can leave a comment for them, and the site where you can sign the petition too. Also, please share this post and more info about this to any social you have and all your family & friends. If we don’t speak out now for the next month, millions of YouTuber’s lives are at stake. For real this time.
I love you guys, and hopefully, we can change their minds. Yes, it seems rare, but maybe they can just finally wake up and see how much damage this can do more than any good.
Also to my favorite youtubers: @therealjacksepticeye @markiplier @thatsthat24 @danielhowell @gabsmolders @obviouslypancakes @pixlpit @theodd1sout , Pewdiepie, The Game Theorists, JaidenAnimations, AmazingPhil, Shane Dawson, and many, many others on the platform:
I hope we can help you guys keep your careers. You guys have spent years making videos, and let’s not let some ridiculous, out-of-control law stop you guys from such! I love you guys and your content, and we all do! Let’s just hope...I’ve done tried to speak out about it too, hopefully you guys will too (even though it’s a tough subject to talk about).
Totes yeet yo
Let’s just vibe and hopefully the FTC will deal with it,,,,
