I’m a youtube addict (sheltered and isolated from elementary school through high school, and youtube became my way to “be around people” when not in school), I’ve seen them change stuff over the years but now it’s just weird.
Youtube isn’t trying to make the site better nor play to the uniqueness that made it so popular to begin with, seems to just snatch all the other social media attributes and shove them in even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense. When they stopped showing the dislike numbers that was messed up because it made it harder to tell the bullshit videos from others (if there’s hundreds of dislikes and a handful of likes you didn’t need to waste your time). July 2026, they got rid of the dislikes all together on YouTube shorts.
Since engagement doesn’t take into account if it’s liked/ disliked, creators would still get brownie points for generally high engagement. I assume it was the same with shorts, but trying to get viewers to choose “not interested” or “don’t recommend this channel” would take away half of the engagement. Like, that won’t “help the algorithm do its job”.
