I got a job! Yay?
For graduating this past May, getting a job 3 months later in August is not a bad deal for a 22 year old in the 21st century. I could not have been more excited to wake up everyday, go to an office, have my own desk, and most importantly make my own money, real money. Of course it’s not in a field that I studied in college or one that I am particularly interested in but ya gotta start somewhere, right?
Fast forward 5 months later and here I am, waking up every morning slightly less excited than before. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely don’t dread going to work every morning, (getting out of bed is a different story), I love the people I work with and the company itself is great. But today on my daily commute to work where I usually just ruminate in my thoughts, I thought to myself, “Yeah, you like the people you work with and the company you work for but do you actually like what you do? Does this make you want to jump out of bed every morning and get excited about going to work?” The answer to that is HELL NO. I could not care less about market research. Sure it’s interesting but do I wake up excited to get to work? no. I want to do something I’m passionate about, something I’m excited to wake up for every morning. I want to feel like I have a purpose (like Justin Bieber’s new album #fire).
This is where I think the disconnect between Gen X and Gen Y is. I feel like people my age are striving to have a job with purpose, something meaningful to them. While I was still in college my mom asked me what I wanted to do after I graduated. I said I didn’t know, granted I still don’t know now, but I did know that I wanted it to be something that I’m passionate about. She pretty much laughed in my face and told me that was never going to happen. Of course that was discouraging but looking at my parents, aunts, uncles, and mostly every other middle aged male or female and seeing how much they hated their jobs, I realized that’s no way to live. You spend most of your life at your job, who wants to spend it being miserable? Sure as hell not me.
But until that time comes where I can find an opportunity to turn my passion into a career and finally be able to answer the age old question “What do you want to do with your life?”, I will continue to be a lost puppy trying to convince everybody around me that I’m a working adult that knows what I’m doing. Stay tuned to hear about all of the mess ups and completely embarrassing moments as I fail to adult.
