Yoshie Akiba: the Woman Behind the Iconic Bay Area Jazz Venue
Yoshie Akiba has had an interesting life that began 73 years ago in a Japanese orphanage close to a U.S. military base. Music and dance informed her heart and soul. She moved to the States, eventually settling in the Bay Area, where she opened the now legendary jazz club Yoshi’s in Oakland. This profile comes from The Mercury News in San Jose, California.

It was 20 years ago today: Bill Frisell's East/West was released on Nonesuch. On the double album, he performs originals and standards live from New York's Village Vanguard, with Tony Scherr on bass and acoustic guitar and Kenny Wollesen on drums, and Yoshi's in Oakland, with Viktor Krauss on bass and Wollesen on drums and percussion.
“One of the best of his career ... Frisell is a wonder.” —Salon
