so the first time i listened to shadow, i did it without the captions on, so i didn’t know what the korean lyrics meant. i just purely listened to the music first.

now i don’t think it takes much to notice that there’s a clear switch in tone around the 2:05 mark, which ends up leading a even more clear change in tone and rhythm around the 2:18 mark, where yoongi raps in quite a distorted and rough voice. during my first listen i found this shift very jarring (though i did really like it)

this tonal shift, however, made complete sense when i turned on the captions and started reading the translated lyrics. 

at the 2:05 mark we turn from yoongi to his shadow. between 2:05 and 2:18 he’s repeating the english lyrics about all the things he wants, that yoongi was just singing/rapping before that moment, but he repeats them in a rougher voice. and then around 2:18 a complete shift in the song happens and these are the lyrics that follow it:

and that’s where the song ends.
