Ship Awareness # 2 Kim & Pie (Yes or No 1+2)

I'm back again but this time around with an Asian(Thai) lesbian couple because yes my interest do stretch far and wide.

Yes or No is a set (2) of movies which Thai name actually translates to 'Let's love as we wish'. Pie (Played by Aom) is featured as a traditionalist whose judgment seems deep routed from her family home with her mother who clearly has dislike and disapproval of homosexuality and toms alike. She's just gotten rid of her lesbian roommate when in walks her new roommate Kim (Played by Tina) who happens to have the appearance of a tom (lesbian with a masculine appearance) simply put this does not make Pie happy but it and their clear difference of views (Pie with her slight bratty ways and a need to control and Kim with her kill them with kindness personality) makes for a great comedic relief and a great ship.

This thing I love about the movies is that the director had a thought in mind when she started working on this project and you feel that throughout both movies because it transfers. Just looking at the two titles and the characters alone lets you understand that theme. Lets love as we wish becomes the question and between these two girls comes the answer (yes or no). At the start Pie is a def 'no' but as the story goes on and she falls for Kim because doesn't fear allowing her to be who she is and because the very nature of Kim forces Pie to see the world in eyes different than the ones her mother presented her with.

Another thing I loved was how they mesh the relationship with the theme. Pies question of self was if she was able to trust their type of love because she'd always been taught to think otherwise. While Kim's question was if she was lovable as who she was because even though Kim did not lack self-love theres still those doubts in the capabilities of others when society is telling you that you're 'wrong' or 'lacking'.

The movies are so cute but pack such a huge punch. It's so entertaining that you don’t even notice until that one scene happens and everything they were trying to mentally get you to think about clicks and you're left stunned. One of the stunning things about this movie is the fact that it features the so called 'butch' or tom perspective. Homosexual movies are limited and lesbian ones even more so and those usually feature two fem lesbians. If the movie does feature an androgynous character it's told from a positive viewpoint of their popularity in the lesbian community not their hardships that reside in the everyday world that can and sometimes do put pressure on their relationships. This theme was constant throughout both movies, and the ost mv 'One day would you be brave enough' where the director created a whole new short story featuring Aom & Tina.

I love when the arts question the norm or go against the stereotypical. We have a bad habit of putting people in these gender roles, a man has a set of things he's supposed to do and the woman has a different set, it's not a far stretch that since Kim looked the part she would take on the male gender roles but thats not her personality at all. Kim is the caregiver, she cooks and cleans, shes afraid of the dark and bugs, she's helpful charming and sensitive.  While Pie would be considered the fem she was messy, bossy, blunt, she can't cook to save her life, she like Kim is serious about her work. Both girls were a mixture of what some would call masculine and feminine but it didn't classify them it didn't allow you to put them in this nice and neat box you were forced to see them not what their appearance made them seem. It's one of my favorite things about this pairing.

Kim & Pie is a ship for those that like the opposite attracts, hate/love, friends before lovers type of relationships. They have this air of truth to them thats refreshing but come with the type of lessons that makes us evaluate our own relationships.

Tina & Aom

If you're wondering yes that is Tina's style. Tina was discovered when the director saw her at college while she was searching for someone to take the role of Kim. Tina was wearing the regular uniform (shirt & skirt) but she had a boyish hair cut and the director knew she was the perfect fit for the character, someone who you couldn't tell their sexuality just by looking at them. Tina gain popularity after the first movie which made her one of the more famous androgynous actresses from Thailand (which is very rare) she tours and meets fans, models for clothing lines, in a musical band and acts of course. 

The chemistry between the two always seems to leave the audience begging for more. Their popularity steamed not only a sequel but they sometimes model together, and Tina did a guest role in Aom's drama Jud Nud Phob. I'm pretty sure since fans are wanting a part 3 these two could just work with only these two and people would be happy.

They kept things cute and light trying to keep things in the intended audience category with only the hints that they could steam up the camera if they wanted to. I think thats why they worked so well because their pairing was such a tease such a draw of two worlds meshing into one making you desire more.
