Do you have any other posts/resources about bpd being caused by childhood trauma (/parental abuse/neglect)? I always felt the same way but i havent been able to find a source that says so, just people being like "its unclear whether its caused by genetics or trauma blabla". Even in the online (tumblr) bpd community I havent seen much discussion/information about this.
sure thing!

According to Pearson’s correlations, childhood maltreatment had a strong association with most PDs. Subsequently using partial correlations, significant relationships were also demonstrated between Cluster-B PDs and all the traumatic factors except physical neglect. A strongest positive correlation was found between Cluster-B PD and CTQ total scores (r=.312, p <.01). Using the Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test, significant differences in 4 groups of subjects (Cluster-A PD, Cluster-B PD, Cluster-C PD and Non-PD) in terms of emotional abuse (χ2 = 34.864, p <.01), physical abuse (χ2 = 14.996, p <.05), sex abuse (χ2 = 9.211, p <.05), and emotional neglect (χ2 = 17.987, p <.01) were found. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that emotional abuse and emotional neglect were predictive for Cluster-A PD and Cluster-B PD, and sexual abuse was highly predictive for Cluster-B PD, only emotional neglect was predictive for Cluster-C PD.

Several studies have shown that a diagnosis of BPD is associated with child abuse and neglect more than any other personality disorders [7, 8], with a range between 30 and 90% in BPD patients [7, 9].

Subjects with borderline personality disorder (N = 21) or borderline traits (N = 11) and nonborderline subjects with closely related diagnoses (N = 23) were interviewed in depth regarding experiences of major childhood trauma. Significantly more borderline subjects (81%) gave histories of such trauma, including physical abuse (71%), sexual abuse (68%), and witnessing serious domestic violence (62%); abuse histories were less common in those with borderline traits and least common in the subjects with no borderline diagnosis. These results demonstrate a strong association between a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and a history of abuse in childhood.

Childhood sexual abuse is not the only form of maltreatment that has been linked with BPD. Physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect are all associated with the development of the disorder. In some studies, the rates of maltreatment were as high as 90 percent in BPD patients... Additionally, those with BPD believe less in the benevolence of others and the world in general compared to patients with other personality disorders. More women than men report high-betrayal trauma, which may serve to explain why more women, approximately 75 percent, are diagnosed with BPD.
