Northrop YF-17 Cobra was a prototype fighter built to participate in the USAFs Lightweight Fighter (LWF) evaluation program although it lost to the YF-16 (now F-16 Fighting Falcon), it was selected by the US Navy via the Naval Fighter Attack Experimental (VFAX) program, it underwent some modifications and it entered service as the larger F/A-18 Hornet, now fully converted for naval operations.
