Or at least, she feels like she can't.
She feels like there is a vice that has snaked its way into her chest and is using all of its strength to squeeze the life out of her lungs.
Plus it's dark. Everything is pitch black. Its somehow dark but not. There's a dull rustling, almost as if she is listening to the world through a muted tube.

Then she smells it. The smoke. It's crippling. A burnt undertone that leaves a sharp sting against her nostrils.
The dull ringing, the rustling, the smoke; it's all so much and so little at the same time.
"She's alive but unresponsive."
The accented voice pierces through the highway collision of her awareness. It's French.
Who's voice is that? Is it Emmanuelle? No. It's much to deep to be Emmanuelle. Must be Gustave. Wait, where is she?
"Goddamnit Cohen!"
Everything goes mute again.
