Supernatural Fanfiction Appreciation challenge- Underappreciated Fic Thursday
The Life of Death by yellowturtle
When the world reverts to its original state, blossoming anew with life after the destruction of Earth, Castiel still exists. This is the story of Cas and death, pulled apart by his duty to the reapers, the humans, and God, and the lifetimes he spent to find Dean Winchester again.
What is the cause of Castiel’s perpetual resurrection? And if he keeps coming back, will he continue to do so after the universe ends and beyond?
I can’t believe how underappreciated this fic is!
This was one of the first destiel fics I have ever read, and to this day it remains one of my favourites.
I love the universe the author creates, the way everything comes full circle and not a single detail is without meaning. The idea of two different timeliness that endlessly alternate, that are interwoven and yet separated, spiralling endlessly into eternity is endlessly fascinating.
But the best thing about this story is Cas’s character growth: how he is broken and reshaped by pain, how the years leave their mark on him, how his love for Dean, though eternal,is fraught with bitterness and anger and resentment. Death is still Cas, but he is also quite obviously not Cas,and the change is so gradual that it feels perfectly natural.
His confrontations with the other characters are amazing, especially with Lucifer, Naomi and Abbadon : they always give me so much satisfaction!
And then there’s Tessa, and a cruel God that is actually just afraid to die, and THE LAST CHAPTER!
I cry very easily : at the first mention of something emotional I always burst out in tears. Yet this story never makes me cry: it just causes emotion to build up inside my chest until my muscles are tense and there is a lump in my throat. After the last chapter I inevitably have to go for a walk to regain my bearings. That’s the kind on impact this fic has had on me.
Also, every single time Death appears in supernatural I think “what’s going on in your head, Cas?”. I mean, I am actually unable to see him as anything other than Castiel. (Honestly it was crazy when last year half the fandom was convinced Dean would become Death. I was like “How is that possible? Death is CAS”)
Bottom line, this is the kind of story that is impossible to put down and will accompany you for a very, very long time.
Do yourself a favour and go read it.
