Perseverance - Chapter Thirteen
KNOCK-KNOCK I wake up, mid-snore, from my awesome dream about being a pirate. Aw maaan, we were just about to find some buried treasure. The navy was on our trail too- “Aisling?” Yep. Should’ve known it would be Goat Mum. “Yo.” I mumble. “It is ten o’clock. You should probably get up – it is bad manners for a bride to sleep in on her own wedding day.” Oh yeah. That’s a thing that’s happening. I look at my dress, hanging on the back of my door. It’s gorgeous, simple, I can wear it more than once, and it’s got HIDDEN POCKETS. I’m going to look so damn awesome. “Okay, will do.” I call back. “I brought you some coffee too.” “You’re the best, Goat Mum.” “Thank you, dear.” - Eventually, I’m done drinking coffee and talking with Toriel. Then she basically pushes me into the shower and I get dressed afterwards. Then, like, a horde of people barge into my room and start attacking me with wax and tweezers. Calibri was great at doing my eyeshadow, but now she’s moved onto the eyeliner. It’s really… unpleasant having someone that close to your eyeball and my eyes keep on watering. “Ow!” “S-Sorry!” “Here, lemme do it.” I grab the eyeliner off of her, dry my eyes, and apply it no problem. “Mascara?” Without another word, she hands it over. I catch her expression in the mirror. Damn, now I feel bad… “I-I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you… and on your wedding day, too…” “Here.” I hand the make-up back to her. I’d turn around, but Cassie’s curling my hair right now, and any sudden movements could be painful. I flash her a smile in the mirror. “Don’t apologise. It’s not your fault I’ve got a sensitive waterline and stuff. You did great with the eyeshadow – I look awesome!” Calibri’s eyes (well, eye sockets) lit up. “I’m sorry for being an ass.” “It’s okay…” She gives a smile. Aww, skele-girl’s happy. Yay! “Yeah, nothing we haven’t dealt with before.” “N-No, Ash, that’s Cassie’s views, not mine!” Calibri waves her hands frantically. “I-I’m fine and y-you’re not…” “It’s fine, seriously.” I smile at her. “And I’m not annoyed at either of you.” “Yet.” God dammit Cassie, why are you like this… Still, I look amazing. It just needs a few finishing touches…
Toriel hasn’t seen me since I was in my pyjamas, so when she re-enters the room and sees me all dressed up, as per Dreemurr protocol, she starts tearing up. Crybabies, the lot of them. I love it. “My dear…” She whispers, “You look so beautiful. I… I cannot believe how much you have grown up since the first time I saw you.” “Mmyep! What the Queen said.” Cassie adds, grabbing some hair pins from her bag and taking the basket of tiny blue flowers from Toriel’s hand. “Thanks guys.” I grin, holding my hair in place to make it easier for both of them. Goat Mum puts her glasses on and watches carefully as Cassie pins them into place. She tries herself, but her hands shake more than they used to, so she needs some help. Cassie guides her until she gets the hang of it and takes over. “So Aisling…” Toriel gives a small smile, “How are you feeling?” “Huh?” I hadn’t been following the conversation at all. Busy thinking about that pirate dream again. “Oh, uh… fine, I guess.” “You don’t feel nervous or anything?” Cassie asks. “Nah, just kind of… happy, I guess. I mean, it’s just me and Morgan… levelling up our relationship, right?” “Oh, it is far more than that.” Toriel’s smile is soft, but there’s a little glint in her eye that puts me on edge a bit. “Marriage changes people. Things won’t be the same – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.” “How will they change…?” I ask, frowning slightly. “From experience, you will make some friends and lose others. Your priorities shift, because you’re no longer thinking about just yourself anymore. Not to mention the prospect of children-“ “Hahaha, we’re not there JUST yet…” I chuckle, but then I catch my own concerned look in the mirror. But things are so good now, I don’t want them to change… “You okay there, girl?” Cassie asks, seeing my face. I nod, not saying anything. “Don’t worry, you’re rushing it a bit, but that’s okay – I think you two will last…” “Well, I wasn’t worried about that before, but now I am. Damn… we really DID rush into this, didn’t we?” “Well no, but kind of, yeah-“ “The important thing is,” Toriel chips in, “That you and Morgan have been friends ever since you’ve known each other. You have grown up and inspired each other so much. You have both become better people because of each other and will continue to do so.” “… Thanks, Goat Mum.” I smile gratefully at her. “No problem, my dear. It is a rare thing that the both of you have, and which many people search their whole lives for. Some in the wrong places…” “Heeey, don’t call me out like that!” Cassie huffs, as we both laugh. “My apologies, I am rather… sassy today.” Toriel chuckles and pats the cat-girl on the shoulder. “I blame the early start.” “Yeah, it was pretty early for me too.” I admit. “Oh please,” Cassie rolls her eyes, “We all gave you a lie-in, and you know it. Everyone else has been up since, like, 7.” “Anyway, I believe that we are done.” Toriel stands back to admire her handiwork. I might not have a crown, but a) I didn’t want one anyway and b) damn if those flowers don’t look beautiful in my hair… “It’s gorgeous…” I breathe. “You look great!” Cassie grins. “Bet you anything that Morgan’s going to cry when he sees you.” “That is assuming that he hasn’t already.” Toriel smiles. “Out of happiness, right?” I frown. “Duh.” Cassie smirks at me. “But now that you mention it…” “Please don’t make my daughter any more paranoid on her wedding day.” Toriel takes out her phone. “… We should have left half an hour ago.” Oops. - “Golly, look at you!” Goat Dad’s eyes light up as he sees me for the first time. Dang, everyone’s reacting well. It’s doing wonders for my self-esteem. “Morgan’s a lucky man – you look beautiful, dear!” He smiles at me, before wrapping me in a fluffy, warm hug. Oh. Yep. Can hear him now. The King is sobbing. That didn’t take very long – not that I expected it to. Geez, all the men in our family are soppy crybabies. Morgan’s going to fit in (again) just fine. I grin and hand him a tissue from one of my hidden pockets. “Not on the dress, okay?” I laugh as he pulls away, slightly embarrassed. “S-Sorry, I just…” “It’s okay, I was just warning you.” He chuckles and holds my hand. We’re supposed to link arms, but with him being eight feet tall and me barely scraping five feet… that ain’t happening. With his other hand, he dabs at his eyes and blows his nose. I turn back to the doors keeping us from the main hall. It’s all blurred, thanks to the frosted glass, but I can see a lot of movement happening. “Dang… there sure are a lot of people out there, aren’t there?” “Probably most of the kingdom.” Asgore agrees. I frown and look down at my bouquet. Orange roses – a mix of yellow (friendship) and red (love). Friends to lovers. Seems fitting. So why does my stomach feel all weird? Did I eat something bad? Should I have had more lunch? Probably- “Are you okay, Aisling?” “… What if things change for the worse?” I blurt out, looking up at him. “I mean, we jumped right to the engagement even though we were split up for a couple of months beforehand. What if that happens again?” “Then you will need to talk things through a lot sooner. Most of those were spent with you two ignoring each other. Both of you will need to swallow your pride and reach out. But here is another question for you,” He smiles softly, his dark red eyes twinkling slightly. “… Do you think it will happen?” “No.” I smile too. “Well then, there is your answer.” “But what if everything changes?” I ask, still a little concerned with what Toriel said earlier on. “It will only change as much as you want it to. You are under no one’s obligations but your own. As long as you don’t break the law, that is.” He chuckles. “As King, I strongly discourage doing that. But you can still use the internets as much as you want and collect as many of those dolls as you want.” “They’re figurines, Dadgore.” I roll my eyes, but I do feel better now. “So… did you do that too? Keep your weird hobbies from before you were married?” He stares at me in disbelief. What? Did I say something? “I have been known to garden occasionally…” Ohhhh… I’m a dumbass. How did I forget that? “… All the time, every day.” I finish, grinning up at him. “I trip over your pots – why do you leave them in the hall?” “To cover up the grey - the castle needs more colour…” “You’ve totally overgrown the throne room. If you were left alone, the castle would be a jungle.” “Perhaps if I had more energy. I’m not as young and sprightly as I used to be.” He smiled, grey hairs glistening in the light. “Anyway, are you ready, dear?” I take a deep breath and turn back to the door. “Yep. Let’s do this.”
Asgore gives my hand a squeeze as the door opens. Oh heck, there’s a lot of people here. But then I see a very gorgeous man in a very snazzy suit run to the top of the aisle, to get a better look at me. “Morgan-!” Nothing else matters. I feel my heart pounding in my chest. I run past everyone else and practically leap at him, wrapping him in a hug. He’s laughing and crying, and I’m not far off from ruining my mascara either. We stay there for a few moments, happy and safe. I definitely made the right choice.
