No, you don't have to read Old Rules. The only fic I'd say you should read to avoid epic confusion is You Can Bite Me.

While it was an Old Rules scene in the last chapter, you only have to recognise that it was another time and place from where the first/main story is situated.

I hadn't really thought about that, now that you mention it. I had just whipped up some vignettes to show their passage through time, but there could be some potential there.
