Ypsi Black Youth Collective
Tuesday, March 26, 2013
I've been working on a project here in this uniquely wonderful city that I've been a resident of for 5 years now. Ypsilanti has its quirks and shortages-I love this place but I hate the politics. (I hate politics in general; I've been learning that about myself lately). Ypsilanti is a relatively diverse city just outside of the glamorous-wish-they-were-Seattle city of Ann Arbor. Lots of poor people live here, there's a huge homeless population, and much like many other "diverse" cities, black youth are struggling to graduate and continue their education. All-in-all, the schools aren't shit. Yes, the city that lies directly next to Ann Arbor, the powerhouse of education (U of M, Ann Arbor Public Schools are among the best in the country) is no different than any other "diverse" school whose achievement gap is consistent and evident:
African American students were 10% proficient and Caucasian students were 45% proficient in writing.
-YPS Annual Education Report My goal here is to link up students from my school and local high school students to form *dun-di-di-daaa* YPSI BLACK YOUTH COLLECTIVE! I'm very excited, and I'm not here to discuss my fears of starting something I won't finish...but I want to express my NEED to do this. These kids aren't well-versed in their history. I don't mean American White History that we learn in school, I mean BLACK history and the power that comes along with it. I need to instill this into my people as much as I can. I need these kids to know and demand information that will empower them. I'd like to connect these kids with college folk so that they can receive the insight that they won't get in school. Not just black history, but everything. In whatever focus they want to achieve, I want to help them. I want them to know the importance of education, art, and living healthy. All these things that are being kept from them, I want to gather my peers and show these young black men and women how to maximize their potential and DEMAND knowledge. I want to start a garden and work like hell on it. I heard once that there were only 2 grocery stores in the city of Detroit outside of downtown (I found out later there are actually 6. This actually says a lot because area-wise, Detroit is one of the biggest cities. While this doesn't reflect Ypsi's numbers, I still feel the need to teach them and the rest of Ypsi's black community how to grow natural produce and why we need to add this to our values. I want to connect and engage these kids, educationally and artistically. I want these kids to be proud and confident in themselves, and to challenge every misconception. To grow into intelligent, powerful, and inspirational people. I'm short on help and focus but good on drive-hopefully that's enough. =/
