I really only use the followers as generic background fillers, but there have been a few with names, so I quickly whipped these up to sort of distinguish them--these are the ones that have been named or were given tags.
Originally, some of them were gonna have bigger roles, but that was before I decided the bit where the bishops return, so... oops.
"So," Yarjul began after she had grabbed another bucket and some cloth, rejoining Anno at the temple doors. "What are your thoughts on..."
"There's a lot to think about, isn't there." Anno laughed, noticing her pause as she tried to pick a topic. "The sermon, Lady Starwatcher coming back injured, how she's awake now... A lot of stuff has been happening."
"A few of the older members were talking about how 'Ratau' is back." Yarjul nodded. "You know, that rat guy that just showed up."
"Oh yeah, I heard something about that."
Anno opened the doors to the temple, and the two stepped inside. The candle lights were dim, but the pair could easily see what it was Star wanted cleaned.
"Oh wow... What is all this stuff?" Yarjul commented with a whistle as she walked to a particularly large glob of the strange goo.
"It looks kind of like some of the stuff that pops out of the ritual circles when we do something here!" Anno suggested, setting the bucket down. "Don't get too close, though, Lady Starwatcher warned me it's corrosive."
Yarjul immediately withdrew the hand she had been holding out to attempt to poke the substance. As Anno began to wet their mop, she started to use her cloth to soak up some of the mess.
"What do you think she was doing in here?" She asked after a bit, moving to wring out the cloth into her bucket. She noted with a grimace that even a drop of the stuff clouded the water an oily reddish-black.
"Must have been something super important or dangerous, if it was a ritual she didn't call on us for." Anno said thoughtfully.
"Say, do you think..." Yarjul started, but trailed off, halfway frozen towards the next spot of goo.
"Yeah?"
"Um... Well... Lady Starwatcher's been holding sermons less and less frequently, and... Hasn't really had us do anything like construction or what have you, since freeing the One Who Waited." Yarjul continued carefully, knowing the weight of what she was about to suggest. "You don't think she's..."
Anno stopped their mopping, turning to look at Yarjul with a surprisingly cold expression.
"Just what are you implying?" They asked.
Yarjul swallowed hard. She shouldn't have even brought it up. Why did she even try, when she knew Anno was close to the loyalty enforcer?
But it was too late now, so...
"What if she's losing interest in us?"
A heavy silence hung in the air as Anno still stared at Yarjul, expression unreadable. What had just come out of Yarjul's mouth, after all, was a clear sign of dissent.
"That's--"
Blrgl.
Anno had started to protest, but the sound of something bubbling caught their attention, and they looked further into the temple.
In the center of the floor, on top of a simple pentagram surrounded by extinguished candles, was the largest glob of the substance they were trying to clean.
The two approached it cautiously, leaning over to watch as it shifted sickeningly.
The blob twitched and writhed, making more unsettling burbles before it settled down again, oozing out onto the floor.
Yarjul looked up at Anno, who had suddenly lost their composure, clutching the broom as if for dear life. She recalled they had been squeamish, but did this really bother them that much?
