A small terrestrial flatworm that we found in the bathroom at the holiday home we were staying out down in Yallingup a few years back.

According to Leigh Windsor, who IDed it for me, “In Australia, land planarians are occasionally found in bathrooms, especially in the tropics where I live. In older homes they may venture from the yard up the floor drain into the bathroom. In other cases the flatworms were probably accidently carried indoors on clothing - people working in the garden accidently brushing against a sticky planarian. Once in the bathroom, the planarians will seek out a dark damp location. When people find a planarian in the toilet bowl they get concerned that they have passed the flatworm. This will not be the case as planarians are generally repelled by fresh faeces, and there is experimental evidence to support this. Dogs especially may have a planarian adhering to their rear end as they contacted a planarian in the yard. Such cases when planarians are found on humans, native and domestic animals are termed pseudoparasitism. I have a few cases from Australia and overseas of this phenomenon.”

It’s a small planarian with a brown median stripe and darker broader paired lateral dorsal stripes between which is a pale yellowish ground colour heavily mottled with brown mottling the same colour as the median stripe. Ventral surface whiteish. Originally described from specimens obtained in the vicinity of the Mundaring Weir, much nearer Perth.
