HER WARNING WAS LEFT UNHEEDED. TO MANY, IT WOULD NOT OCCUR TO THINK OF HER WORDS AS ONE. A WARNING, THAT IS. YET CHARLOTTE HERSELF IS, IN MANY WAYS, A WARNING. AN OMEN OF THE INEVITABLE, AND SOMETIMES, SHE WAS FRIENDLY ENOUGH (KIND ENOUGH EVEN) TO LET YOU IN ON THAT SECRET, BUT NOT ALWAYS IN SO MANY OR NECESSARILY EXACTING WORDS. WHAT FUN WAS A PUZZLE GIFTED ALREADY OPEN AND SOLVED, AFTER ALL? / @yaburnae | CONT. FROM HERE
It was all by design, this much was easily known to her. A familiar play taken out of her own repertoire. The nostalgia and safety of a homey, locally - owned diner; the comfort and promise of hot food, served at surprisingly affordable and reasonable prices despite the increasingly dire economic situation; the casual clothes and unpolished mannerisms to match the imperfect environment. NO PRESSURE, NO DANGER. Yet they both knew this wasn't true. And both were just fine with it. It being the lie, of course. This was simply how their world worked.
Though not at all obvious, Charlotte kept a wary eye on the animal at the foot of their table. She'd been surprised to find it react more or less neutrally to her. This was not her usual experience with animals, much less dogs. While it sat calmly, Charlotte was waiting for a flame to spark. The façade of ease could only last for so long, no matter if Mitch would finish his order of the breakfast kitchen sink or not. She did not believe for a second that his signal to a healthy appetite on this rainy morning did not, in turn, add to the theatrics, whether it was real or not. Charlotte had a choice here. She could draw the curtains early and cut to the chase. Or, she could let the play run its natural course and enjoy a fine meal herself in the meantime.
Drawing up and folding one leg beneath herself, if only to prop herself up more properly on the booth's old and sagging seat cushion, ( and perhaps, to remove at least one limb from the german shepherd's list of potential targets ), Charlotte plucked a strip of bacon off her plate and dipped it in some ketchup. " Could be? You mean you can't decide? " With a grease - free pinky finger, she pivoted one of the photos to face her squarely. It'd been taken through a window, up high, into the room of another condominium building. Four people were present in the photo, one of which Charlotte supposed was meant to be her, but she couldn't quite recognize herself. She knew everyone else in the photo, however, and that was enough to justify accepting that the blonde leaning against the far wall was her. " Who do you want dead this time, hm? If you haven't decided that either, I suggest this one, " she told him, gesturing to the man standing opposite her, by the window, in the photo.
