Fic: âBetter Late Than Neverâ (Happy Birthday, xv12!)
This fic is a birthday gift for the lovely and wonderful @xv12. It has been such a joy to flail around in your messages this year. Thank you for always listening, even when I switch topics from squeeing about cuddling to pondering alien technology to outlining my plan to throw tampons at auditors all within the span of one episode. For you, a story set in your favorite realm of Denial Land.Â
Mulder is plotting a surprise for Scully. Season Eight AU, MSR, rated G, also here at Ao3.
.....
Mulderâs plotting something, Scullyâs sure of it. She can just tell, by this point: something about the look on his face gives it away. Â What exactly he has in mind, though, is less obvious. Â She tried asking him straight out, yesterday afternoon, but all he said was, âItâs a surprise, Scully. Â You wouldnât want to spoil a surprise, would you?â Â And when she said that she didnât know about that, it depended on what kind of surprise it was, he said, âOh, youâll like it, Scully.â And when she tried to follow up on that, he said, âIâm not answering any more questions. Â Come on, what do you want to do for dinner?â
She didnât push it. Â Maybe under other circumstances she would, but not right now. Â Right now, he can plot any kind of surprise he wants to, no matter how outlandish, and she doesnât think that she can even pretend to object. Â Sheâs that happy to have him here.
Because sheâd been afraid that sheâd lost him. Â She hadnât let herself admit it, not at the time; sheâd insisted to Skinner and Agent Doggett and anyone who would listen that they were going to find him. Â But when she did find him, out there in the desert in Arizona, when she found him and she knew that it was really really him, very weak maybe but still alive, when she held him to her under the stars and watched over him in the hospitalâwhen that happened, she did think to herself, as she sat by his bed holding his hand, that some small part of her had been afraid that she wouldnât find him alive, or at all. Â She didnât tell him everything sheâd been thinking, but she did press her forehead to his when he was awake, whispering, âMulder, you scared me.â Â They werenât thoughts she wanted to dwell on long, though; it was too hard to even think about what it would have been like if sheâd never seen him again, if they hadnât gotten to sit together like this, if she hadnât had the chance to tell him her news and to see his reaction.
No, she wouldnât have wanted to miss seeing that.  He was usually so articulate, but not then.  âReally?â he said, and âReally, Scully?â, and âYouâre reallyâŚ?â, and âYou meanâŚdid we reallyâŚ?â
âReally,â she said.  âIâm going toâŚâ  And then she amended it, when she saw the look on his face.  âWeâre going to have a baby.â Â
âOh,â he said, and his voice was so quiet, but she could tell that he shared her joy. Â âOh, Scully.â His kiss was gentle; his arms held her tightly. Â And now that theyâre back in DC, heâs thrown himself into the role of expectant father. With a vengeance. Â Which means a lot of fussing over her.
She canât sit down on the couch without him trying to pile at least five cushions behind her back. Â âWhat are these for, exactly?â she asked him once; he couldnât answer, but he keeps doing it anyway. Â When she was sneezing a lot one day on a caseâsomething in the air, probably, nothing worth worrying aboutâhe wouldnât stop asking her if she was all right. Â âIâm fine,â she said every time. Â He always nodded, but then he went ahead and asked her again and again, until she told him that he was making everyone wonder what the hell was going on with them. Â And then thereâs the way he makes breakfast. Â She told him, the first time she came into the kitchen and saw him, that he didnât have to do that for her and that she was pretty sure that toasting bread and slicing fruit werenât on any list of prohibited activities for pregnant women. Â He said that he knew that, but he wanted to anyway. Â So now he does, most mornings. Â
Because now heâs at her place most mornings. Â Itâs not really something theyâve talked about, let alone planned. Â In a way, though, itâs just a more extreme version of something that started a couple of months ago, after he got back from England. Â Before that, theyâd never spent the night at each otherâs places when they had work in the morning, but that night, after they made love, she didnât want to leave. Â Then, of course, she had to get out of bed the next morning when he was still half-asleep. He groaned her name and clutched at her when she was getting up, and she had to whisper, âGo back to sleep. Â I have to go home and change,â when what she really wanted was to slide back in next to him and stay there.
They didnât talk about it during the day, but after work he said, âI was thinking. Â You could keep some things at my apartment. Â If you like.â Â His hand touched hers.
She nodded. Â âYou could keep some things at my place too. Â Iâd like that.â
It started out smallâjust a few of his clothes at her apartment and a few of her clothes at his, tucked neatly into drawers. Â You wouldnât have thought, looking at either place, that anything was different. Â They added more things as the weeks went by. Â Nothing crazy, still.
Once he was back, though, once heâd been taken and returned, things shifted. Â She doesnât want him away from her, and he doesnât seem to want to be away. Â It isnât just a few of his things at her place, now. Â Itâs a lot of his things. Â And itâs almost always him. Â Even her mom knows whatâs going on, more or less: the last time she came over, unexpectedly on a Saturday morning, Mulder was sitting on the couch without a shirt on, and Scully was sitting next to him, wearing the shirt. Â Her mom didnât seem too fazed. Â âYou make sure Danaâs taking care of herself,â she told him when she was leaving.
âOh, I do,â he said.
âMom, donât encourage him,â Scully said. Â
The thing is, though, she doesnât mind too much. Â Yes, all the fussing can be annoying, and she does tell him when he takes it too far, when he acts like she doesnât know how to keep herself and the baby safe and healthy or like sheâs going to shatter any minute if he doesnât step in to protect her. Â But he does things that she likes too. Â Brings her tea when sheâs feeling queasy. Â Rubs her back. Â Holds her so close at night. Â Heâs here. Â Sheâs got him back (something that she thought might not happen), and theyâre going to have a baby together (something that she thought would never happen). Â
So let him plot whatever heâs plotting. Â Maybe itâll be something irritating. Â Maybe itâll be something sweet. Â Itâll be something he came up with, at any rate, and right now, that alone seems like a wonderful thing.
 .....
Scully gets tired more easily now, not that she likes to admit it. Â The first thing she does when they get back to her apartment is usually to sit down. And then to tell Mulder that she doesnât need all those cushions. Â Itâs the same at the office, minus the cushions. Â Thatâs what gave Mulder the idea.
Well, it was actually Scullyâs own idea, of course, about three and a half years ago. Â He should have done it then. Â The only thing he can sayâand itâs not an excuseâis that the whole thing quickly became a symbol of more than it was, one of the rare times their arguments got more ugly and personal than professional. Â Maybe they would have talked about it again at some point, but after that, some pretty serious things started happening. Â But pretty serious things are always happening to them. Â That partâs definitely not an excuse.
He wants to do it now, anyway. Â Partly because he wants her to be comfortable, but thatâs not the only reason. Â Right now, he wants to show her how he feels about her: to show her that, as far as heâs concerned, theyâre partners in every sense.
Thereâs a part of him that still canât believe the way things have worked out.  Back when they tried the IVF and it didnât take, he told her not to give up; he meant it, of course, but still he never expected something like whatâs happened now.  Neither of them even thought it was a possibility, and yet here they are. Sheâs pregnant with their baby, and practically every time he looks at her he wants to hold her close and tell her how beautiful she is.  He canât do that all the timeâSkinnerâs office, for example, wouldnât be a good place for itâbut he does get to do it pretty often when theyâreâŚmaybe he canât say at home just yet.  But theyâre getting there.  He hasnât slept at his own apartment in two weeks.  He has a designated shelf in her bathroom.  Just this Saturday, he bought the groceries.  He canât believe this part eitherâthat he gets all this time with Scully, that he gets to fall asleep next to her every night, that when he wakes up sheâs still there and sheâll smile at him and say, âGood morning,â like itâsâŚlike itâs the way things are supposed to be.  And maybe it is.  Maybe for once in his life heâs that lucky.
Theyâre not always the luckiest people, of course, and so Mulder still worries. Â He gets on Scullyâs nerves sometimes, he knows, with all the questions about how sheâs feeling. Â Heâs not trying to annoy her, really. Â He just wants Scully and the baby to be safe, whatever happens. Â And he wants her to know that heâs in this with her: now and when the baby is born and for many, many, many years after that. Â âI know what Iâm supposed to be eating, Mulder. Iâm not an idiot,â she told him the other day, and he apologized, because he doesnât mean to make her feel like he thinks sheâs an idiot. Â He means to make her feel like he cares about her (because he does, so much) and like he wants it to be the two of them, side by side like theyâve always been, facing down their old obstacles, taking on this new adventure.
So he wants to do this for her, as a surprise. Â It wasnât that difficult to arrange, really, and itâs supposed to be there today. Â He wants to check first, though; he thinks itâll probably work better if heâs not also surprised. Â He gets up early, while sheâs still asleep, and dresses quietly. Â He leaves her a note on the bedside table. Â Hey Scully, I just went into the office. Â I wanted to take a look at some paperwork. Â See you there later. Â Love, Mulder. Â Sheâll never buy it, of courseâsheâll know that going in early, in a slow week, without her, to take a look at some paperwork is not something he would do. Â He didnât see the need to think of a plausible excuse. Heâs already told her thereâs a surprise, after all, and sheâll probably connect this with that, but he still doesnât think sheâs going to guess what it is.
It is there, when he gets in. Â He spends some time arranging things, although not too much; sheâll probably want to do that herself, he thinks. Â When he hears the elevator, he hurries out of the office, closing the door behind him, standing in front of it to smile at her as she comes down the hall.
She smiles back. Â âHi,â she says.
âHi,â he says.
âHowâs your paperwork coming?â Â Just as he expected, her tone of voice implies that she doesnât have a lot of faith in the existence of this paperwork.
âExcellently,â he says. Â âIf youâll just step into the office, Agent Scully, I think youâll be surprised at what you see.â
âSurprised?â she says. Â âThis doesnât happen to have anything to do with what youâve been plotting this week, does it?â
âIt might,â he says. Â âIt might have something to do with it. Â Why donât you come in and see for yourself?â
âI guess Iâll have to,â she says. Â She follows him into their office. Â She stops. Â And she stares.
She stares for so long that Mulder begins to think heâs miscalculated badly. Â Itâs not as though she needs to look very long to figure out what it is. Â Itâs a plain wooden desk. Â The surface is mostly bare, but heâs moved her things to it, and a nameplate sits on the edge: DANA SCULLY. Â The chairâs a little fancierâitâs supposed to support your back wellâbut itâs still a chair. Â Itâs all pretty simple, but sheâs just staring, her face blank.
He meant it to make her more comfortable. Â He wanted to show her that he cares about what she wants and needs and that he wants the two of them to go into this new stage of things on an equal footing. Â But as she keeps staring, not saying anything, he starts to realize that he could be sending all sorts of messages that he didnât intend. Â Maybe she thinks he doesnât want to share his own space with her anymore. Â Maybe she thinks he has a lot of nerve presenting this as a special surprise now when itâs something she asked for years ago. Â Maybe she thinks he only cares whether or not sheâs comfortable because sheâs pregnant. Â Maybe she thinks heâs being overprotective again.
âScully,â he says, tentatively.  âI just thoughtâŚwell, you did ask about it onceâŚthe chairâs supposed to have good back support.â  As if thatâs the most important part. Â
âMulder,â she says at last. Â âYou got me a desk.â
He nods. Â âYeah,â he says. Â âLook, I know you should have had one before. Â I shouldnât have dismissed it when you brought it up.â
She nods too, acknowledging his words. Â âSo why now?â Â
âI wanted you to have it,â he says. Â âYou deserve it, Scully. Â Weâre partners, and if I have a desk, well, you should have one too.â Â He looks at her. Â He watches her face as, slowly, finally, she smiles.
âThank you,â she says. Â Her voice is calm, not effusive, and maybe thatâs how it should be, he thinks. After all, like he just told her, she deserves this; it should have been a given. Â âThank you for thinking of it.â Â
âItâs notâŚI just wanted you to have it,â he says.  âI wanted you to have a comfortable placeâŚâ
âMulder,â she says.  âThatâs very sweet.  But I really am getting worried that youâre going to drive yourself crazy in the next five months.â  She takes his hand.  âIâm okay, you know.  Itâs sometimesâŚI have a hard time believing all this too.  But weâre all okay.â  Heâd wonder how she knew just what to say if this werenât Scully, who knows him better than anyone.  She wraps her arms around him then, and he reaches out to hold her as well, pulling her close.  âI want to try my new desk,â she says, when they move apart, and now sheâs really grinning as she walks to the chair and sits down.  She leans back experimentally.  âIt is comfortable.â
âYou like it?â he asks.
âI do,â she says. Â âI do.â
When he looks up at her from his own desk in the course of the morning, he sees her arranging her things, putting papers into the drawers, lining up her pens on the desktop, looking pleased and absorbed. Â After they come back from a meeting with Skinner, he watches her sink into her chair with a contented little sigh. Â When she has some paperwork she wants him to sign, she comes over to his desk, leaning in and touching his arm; when he wants to get her opinion on a news story heâs read, which he thinks could legitimately be about vampires, he comes over to hers, hovering behind her as he shows her the paper. Â She dismisses his theory. Â He leans in to kiss her cheek. Â She turns her head, deliberately, and their lips meet. Â

âYou got her pregnant?! What were you thinking?âÂ
âItâs not like we planned it. It just happened.â
âIt doesnât just happen. I would know if it did, I have way more sex than you.â
âMaybe it only happens when you love someone very much,â Lyanna threw in from her place on the couch, but they ignored her.
