This is all just guesswork and headcanon since the show never gave us anything concrete, but here’s what I think…

Sam never really liked hunting. He was never opposed to saving people, but the thing about hunting is that it’s largely about the “hunting things” part of the slogan, and Sam, from a very young age, felt impure. As a young teen, he met and bonded with Amy—someone he was supposed to hunt—and saw the shades of gray in the black and white.

It probably didn’t help that Sam likely felt, at some point, closer to “something that should be hunted” than “someone who should be hunting.” Even becoming a police  would potentially put Sam in the position of “hunting” again, except this time, he’d be hunting without his brother beside him. (A part of me imagines that Sam didn’t like to think about what he’d lost, especially since John pretty much disowned him.)

The thing about being a lawyer is that it’s not about the act of hunting. It’s (ideally, I suppose) about seeking justice. It’s about knowledge and wordplay and argument in front of a judge and/or jury. It’s reason and logic and charisma, and Sam is good at those things. And even if Sam planned on getting into—I dunno, tax law (he was, after all, a mathlete), it’s still normal life. 

It’s safe. 

Sam could still put away bad guys (or defend the innocent, or catch discrepancies, or bury himself in corporate files or whatever types of research his specialization required) without having to be at the other end of a deadly weapon if he didn’t want to. 

But who knows? That’s just one of way too many possibilities. In any case, I think Sam, with his quick mind, his way with people, and his eye for detail, would have made a wonderful lawyer.

Hnghhh just. Imagine lawyer Sam decked out in a nice suit (and maybe glasses haha) sweet-talking a witness on the stand and just making the witness feel comfortable and deftly questioning them and the jurors eating it all up because of course Sam is the kind of guy you trust.

Sam would make the most badass lawyer.

Really? Making the omlete about Cass? Dean is always hungry and food was in front of him. He's done this so many times! And he sleeps with women all the time idk why she is different? I'm honestly asking for both not trying to be mean I promise.

I don’t want to sound offensive, you probably have good intentions, but the ‘I’m genuinely curious I don’t want to be mean’ line has been used a lot with gaslighting vibes so I am a little cautious about it.

Dean isn’t always hungry and he won’t necessarily eat food just because it’s in front of him. The last time he had an egg-white omelette in front of him, he tried eating it and then said it was crap and stopped eating it. We’re supposed to notice that this time he says ‘I’ll deal’ - he doesn’t like that kind of food, he’s not shown as so hungry he could eat anything, he even complains that Sam didn’t order something better.

He doesn’t sleep with women ‘all the time’ either, and I haven’t even said that this one is different, there was nothing in my post saying anything about the hook up or the woman being ‘different’ from other women he’s had sex with. In other posts I have even said that this hook up fits in a pattern of Dean’s hook up shown in the show.

Right, though? I’d be truly interested in watching that show where Sam isn’t forgiving, because I’ve never seen it. -__-

It really is kinda sad how Sam just lets everything roll off his back. S12 didn’t even give him a chance to respond emotionally to any of the things that happened to him, and it was awfully discouraging. I really, really hope it isn’t a trend that’s going to continue, but I’m worried that it might.

It makes perfect sense that you and many other people, including some of the show’s actors, feel it was OOC. I know a lot of people do! 

Still, I feel very differently about it. In fact, I think it was completely in line with his past actions and responses to grief. Additionally,  Sam canonically thought Dean was dead, and had no reason to think he was anywhere but in heaven. On top of that, Sam had just watched someone he loved very much (Bobby Singer) slowly go vengeful, and his last plea to the boys was to go when it was their time to die. Considering all that together, and Sam’s implied mental state after Dean’s death, his actions make perfect sense. He was traumatized and grieving, unable to bear hunting without Dean. As he mentioned in Hunteri Heroici, he simply couldn’t face it anymore, and he ran.

I completely agree with you that it wasn’t explained well enough, though. Instead, as usual, the season focused on Dean’s mental state and his angry and betrayed response to being “abandoned,” never stopping to give any real weight to Sam’s side of the story. We only got it in bits and pieces, and they were never really unified into a cohesive whole. The message everyone got from all those flashbacks was just that “Sam hit a dog and met a girl.” His grief was made into the butt of a very cruel joke that lasted a whole season–a season that ended with Sam broken and suicidal.

It’s so easy to forget that these boys are human. Sam, at the end of season 7, only just recovering from near-death and debilitating insomnia and mental illness when Dean “died” in front of him, was terribly raw and vulnerable. Season 7 had stripped him of every available support. Dean and Bobby were no longer there, and Sam has, historically, been most vulnerable when he was alone. It’s easy for us to watch the show and wonder why he didn’t save Kevin, but at the same time… I can’t imagine how he’d have had the will to do it. Especially since, last time Dean was “dead” and Sam and got tangled up with demons (Ruby), he was manipulated into raising Lucifer and lost all faith in his ability to make decisions. (He ended the following season asserting he was the “least of any of [them]” and claiming that he knew he wasn’t good enough to do what he needed to do, but that he was unfortunately the only option.)

If I were him, and had the absolutely abysmal estimation of myself that Sam had at the time, I would have run, too, run as far as I possibly could from the loss and the pain and the hunting life itself.

Same, though! I honestly, truly want to be super enthusiastic about this show. I love it and I love the characters, but also I am tired and old, and the bitterness comes more freely nowadays.

I agree with you. I mean... on some level, I was overjoyed with the s12 writing. Dabb took special care to highlight Sam’s intelligence, his competence, his courage, and his love for others, all traits which are pretty darn awesome, and I was pleased to see them. And there were a handful of truly excellent episodes (12.01 and 12.04, especially)!

For some reason, though, Sam’s portrayal felt a bit flat, overall. To me, it seemed that the writing in s12 barely gave Sam the chance to be. Despite the fact that all the major plots had more to do with Sam than with most of the other characters combined, he wasn’t allowed to be confused or angry or hesitant. He wasn’t given the chance to work through his own feelings.

In a way, that’s exactly true to Sam, though. He stamps down his own negative reactions and prioritizes helping others. 

I mean, what he said about Sam fearing that Dean might hate him because of his powers and his strange destiny is the perfect example. Those things haven’t been relevant since season 5 (though his feelings of shame and impurity were prominent in s8), but Sam is obviously still silently struggling with them.

I just really, really, really want some development on that front. I know this phrase is getting worn-out, but I just need the show to #givesamavoice

The way Jared was talking about s13, it almost sounds like Sam is going to have more of a chance to express himself in this coming season, and I hope those predictions prove true!

I love Jody and am glad that the ladies will get their spin-off, but I am also terribly selfish and want Sam to get some time with Jody and also Missouri and her granddaughter, Patience.

I was really, really bothered that they brought the Alpha Vampire back only to kill him. He was an amazing character, and he didn’t deserve such an anti-climactic end. That said, I think the situation between Sam’s treatment of the vampires and Sam’s thoughts on the werewolves are quite different.

Sam’s active participation really only happened thanks to the fact that the vampires invaded the BMoL with the intent of killing everyone.

Sam is a good person who avoids unnecessary bloodshed, but throughout the show, he has never hesitated to defend the people he cared about (and, secondarily, his own safety). His mom was in that base of operations, and she was in peril. I’m not terribly surprised that Sam acted the way he did. He has eradicated vengeful spirits and killed or participated in killing Rakshasa and Djinn and any number of other violent creatures. Sam doesn’t shy away from all killing, but he does disagree with unjust slaughter. While the BMoL’s plan to kill all vampires was horrific and the motives of the vampires were completely understandable, Sam did not have the whole story, and it was an all-out attack.

When he killed the Alpha Vampire, circumstances were also dire.

No I didn’t. She did come off as just rude. Also yeah it did seem like she was in his mind. I heard they were going to make it that it was all in Sam’s mind and he couldn’t deal with losing Dean and was in so much pain so his mind helped him. They decided not to go that route because they said it would make him look unreliable because they already had halucifer. They changed it while filming though I heard that’s why there are elements still of it’s all in his head.
