It was late, but then nightmares rarely reared their ugly heads in the light of day for Declan. He'd tossed and turned for some time, restless with whatever was plaguing his sleep. It was nothing new for the Irishman. Eventually, he awoke with a start, shooting bolt-upright and panting, eyes wide with terror. His body was slick with sweat though he felt cold, like his veins were all iced over, and he was trembling. He hadn't even realized the strangled cry he'd heard only moments before had been his own.

For a moment, he wasn't aware of where he was or what had happened, or that Adam was sharing his bed. He merely clutched a hand to his chest. As if he could reach in and take hold to forcibly slow his rapidly beating heart.

It hurt.

His chest was tight with the anxiety he felt and all he could hear ringing in his ears was the sound of a heart monitor, the single, drawn-out tone of one who had flat-lined. Of someone who had ceased to live.

He'd died. He'd died in his dream like he had in Chicago last year.

An uncontrollable shudder ran through him and he suddenly felt numb. Frozen. He couldn’t move, he was hardly aware of how heavily he was breathing or shaking. After moment he rubbed his face with his hand, realization starting to slowly set in.
