You know what? Scully spent the whole episode (and season) having a mental connection with William. I think she knew damn well he wasn't dead in the end. She was just shocked and trying to ease the blow on Mulder about William not being his son by trying to disconnect herself from the whole broken motherhood experience... While also trying to tell him what she clearly had been wanting to tell him throughout the entire episode. I rewatched it and she sees to always be on the verge to want to tel him something.

What if MSIV ends with Scully waking up in bed and looking over to a bassinet in the room. The other side of the bed is empty. She gets up to go check on the baby who’s crying. Mulder comes back from the other room and meets her at the basinett, picking up the baby and says, “Hey now, William, I thought we already agreed on none of that.”

I want to find our son and bring him home.

Can you imagine Skinner’s reaction to Scully being pregnant again? Like, this poor dude is carrying around the burden of knowing CSM fucked around with their first baby’s conception, agonizing about how to tell them, is probably the CSM and Monica’s bitch right now, plus he’s spending a fortune at the dentist to save his teeth? Then...

Listen, I said MONTHS ago that I don’t hate the pregnancy idea. Like, I DO hate it, but I also just can think of so many other things that I would REALLY hate that I can’t truly work up any serious hatred about it.
