[From here because I am emotional alright.]
Zack blinked. Tired mako swirls searching Sephiroth’s form for some kind of clue on what sprung this sudden question.
Sephiroth currently lay on his back, spirals of silver hair cascading and framing his head like rays moonlight. He looked as beautiful and tragic as the day Zack laid eyes on him. Yet, something was off. Like understanding that you are looking at a dazzling hue of color but someone has changed the saturation. Dimmed it. Made it tired and dark. The library was an eerie place. Dim. Stuffy. Forlorn. Sephiroth currently stared at the cracked ceiling, seeming to want to blend into the environment. stacks of yellowed paperwork sat by him, looking well-read, some even dog-eared.
❝ actually, who am i kidding, yeah, all the time ❞
Tap of his boots as he approached and soft creak of leather as he sat by his friend then laid down, stared up at the same ceiling. It wasn’t necessary for Sephiroth to say something was wrong. That much was obvious. What wasn’t clear, however, was how to remedy it.
❝ do you want to take a different path ? ❞ his voice had an echo and he waited a second before turning to focus his gaze on the other, searching again. A chuckle, then he turned back to watch the ceiling, hands tucked securely behind his head as if they were elsewhere. Stargazing. Or picking shapes out of the clouds on a sunny day.
❝ because i’ll go with you ❞
Of course he would. Zack stretched. Casual. Matter of fact.
❝ – to the end of the world and back, Seph. i’ll follow you. you won’t ever have to go or be alone ❞
Actually, some of the water damage in the ceiling resembled clouds. Close enough, right?
Well. He’d been starting to think maybe it hadn’t been much of a life. He’d already considered the idea of changing it all, of leaving to... do what? He hadn’t really known and it hadn’t mattered, Sephiroth had simply known after he’d accomplished this particular mission...
And then that feeling. And the library, and the... files. It hadn’t been much of a life, had it? For... a reason. For reasons, for things that were still spinning slowly in his mind because they were difficult to fathom. Harder to understand, but to accept..?
He felt tired in a way he never had before. Similar, maybe, but more. Endless exhaustion. Falling to a depth he could never return from, getting lost there, alone, in a dim library. But, then...
He’d been alone. He was alone again. Everyone, everyone except-- “Would you leave Shinra with me?” The words fled from him like startled birds.
He’d been so logical, always. Tried to be, tried to think that way, tried to be-- What they wanted. What he was supposed to be. He was also used to being matter-of-fact, to not hesitating when he spoke, but... Everything changed. Or everything was the same, he just knew suddenly. Opening up an abyss within him. “I don’t... want to be a means to an end. A weapon, a tool, a... Something inside of me is so angry.” Vengeance, vengeance, vengeance-- “But I’m so tired, Zack.”
He chanced a glance over. Just a small one. Even moving his head felt almost too enormous a task.
There was no way to put thoughts into words. Things that were barely thoughts at all. He’d studied so much, both what he was supposed to and an endless amount of things that were never expected of him, but none of that helped in the moment. Who was he? What was he?
Sephiroth ultimately opted for simplicity. “I don’t want to be tired anymore.”
