Watcher, Witch, Shifter, Shade (part 1)
Sophia breathed heavily, slumped against the crumbling wall of the old DMV building. A flock of birds took to the skies, their call reverberating through the overgrown park. Sophia's heart lept even farther up her throat, choking her gasps for air. She tried to swallow the panic. Taking a deep breath she listened for any sign of her pursuers. All she could hear was the bird calls and the distant rustling of the wind in the wild ivy. Very gently she began to relax the fingers clenched around her wrist. Her jaw clenched with a sharp inhale as she revealed the black lettering sharp against her pale skin.
Witch.
With a snarl she glared up at the sky, her eyes flashed bright green and black. Branded for life. Her life would never be the same. She could have hidden it. For nearly two decades she had kept everything under control. Only letting those closest to her know about the flames hidden in her fingertips.
Sophia spat. The taste of the chemicals still bitter in her mouth. Running a hand through the mane of hair, she pulled out the larger of the twigs and leaves. Tossing them aside, Sophia pulled her knees closer into her chest. The first chill of the night started to spread through the park, making Sophia shiver. With a small wave of her hand and a flash of green, she tied to pull together a blanket of ivy. She didn’t get far as a stabbing of pain shot through her wrist, causing the leaves to flutter to the ground again. Sophia’s eyes returned to their normal shade of brown and started to well up with tears. The salty water trickled down her cheeks against her will, stinging in the small cuts criss-crossing across her skin.
A snapping of twigs yanked Sophia to her feet. Her eyes flashed and the wind around her died.
“And here I thought all the Witches were either wiped out or deep in hiding.” A smirking voice seemed to come out of thin air. “Now I see I just hadn’t thought to look at the DMV.”
