WIP Wednesday - WWOTEO - part 2
I decided to partake in WIP Wednesday as regularly as possible to stay motivated to work on the sequel of Whatever Comes After - hopefully it will help me, and hopefully some of you will enjoy this extract!
Albert woke up only to realize that Arthur had let him sleep again, if the stifling heat of the room were any indication. He stretched as he grabbed his pocket watch on the side table – 10 a.m. He was neither surprised nor offended: they had just come back to Beecher’s Hope yesterday evening, and he had definitely needed the rest. If Arthur had decided to go saddle up Buell early and wander around with his brother, that was his own personal choice. He, on the other hand, preferred to enjoy a quiet morning in the lovely company of Abigail.
She was sat in the dining room when he entered the house, and as soon as she heard him coming, she hastily stood up.
‘Good morning, Albert,’ she said over her shoulder as she went to the kitchen. ‘Did you sleep well?’
The photographer glanced at the newspaper half-folded on the table, the one she had just been leaning over. He took his own seat, stroking his too-long beard pensively. Did she…?
‘Like a log,’ he replied out loud as she came back from the kitchen, a cup of coffee in her hands. She handed it to him and he nodded. ‘Thank you, Abigail. And you?’
‘I slept well, thank you.’
She sat down again and they remained quiet for a while, Albert sipping his coffee and observing his friend’s eyes traveling between the newspaper and the cup he was holding. Eventually, they stopped on his face, and she gave him a strained smile. He returned it tranquilly.
‘Jack’s at school and the boys are off hunting,’ she explained, as if to fill the silence. ‘Chores can wait if you wanna rest some more.’
Albert kept his smile as he placed the empty cup in front of him, then looked at her again. Always the others first - well, not this time.
‘And what about you, my dear? What are you doing this morning?’
Once again, her eyes traveled to the newspaper, lying conspicuously on the table next to her folded hands. She observed it for a moment, then sighed deeply. The photographer waited patiently. He had a hunch where this was going, but he didn’t want to force anything if his friend wasn’t ready – he knew it was a sensitive subject, one she didn’t broach often, and certainly not with anyone. She averted her eyes and lowered her voice when she finally answered:
‘You know I can’t read, Albert. I thought I’d accepted it, but it’s been bugging me lately. Of course, Jack can read me your adventures and all, but I… I’d like to do it by myself sometimes, you know?’
She glanced at him, and the photographer nodded quietly. When nothing else came, he reached out to place his hand on her arm.
‘You do know it’s never too late to learn, my dear?’
Abigail snorted as she gently batted his hand away.
‘Don’t be a fool, Albert. Ain’t no one’s gonna teach me to read.’
When she glanced at him again, her beautiful blue eyes were shining with a light that warmed Albert’s heart. Eager to keep it there, he respectfully kept his hand away but still went on:
‘I can teach you while we are here, and you can practice when we are gone. I have no doubt Jack will be glad to help you. That way, you’ll be able to go at your own pace - although I’m sure that, with your tenacity, you’ll be reading in no time.’
Abigail remained quiet for a moment, her shining eyes still glued to his face. Albert started to feel uncomfortable under her intense gaze, afraid he had pushed her too hard, too quickly; but then, she threw herself forward and held him in a tight embrace. Caught by surprise, a laugh escaped his lips, and he had to grip the table with one hand and her friend with the other to avoid toppling over.
‘Oh, Albert, you’re so kind! I’d have never dared…’
‘Please, my dear Abigail,’ he replied while patting her back, ‘in this area, dare all you want with me. It would be my pleasure.’
She let him go and offered him a gorgeous smile. The photographer felt himself blush, but she ignored it as, this time, she placed her hand on his arm, repeating joyfully:
‘You’re so kind, Albert. Thank you.’
