Way Up There, Swinging in Your Seat and Laughing
John Tarrant, Robert Bly, and the Hell Courtesan: 'Way Up There, Swinging in Your Seat and Laughing'
[Image: “Hell Courtesan,” painted by Kawanabe Kyosai (1831–1889). After reading the whiskey river posts which I share below, I tried mightily to find one of the paintings described by John Tarrant. I could not — at least, not before finding this one, first… which delighted me too much not to share! Seeing (and Treasuring) the Progress in the Standing Still
Andre Gide, Oliver Burkeman: 'Seeing (and Treasuring) the PROGRESS in the STANDING STILL'

(Swipe left/right to alternate between desaturated and full-color versions of the photograph.)] Turns out that our anonymous whiskey river friend has actually had pneumonia, not flu and certainly not the suspected “ordinary, everyday, common” flu. But this week they’ve managed, even so, to offer us one tidbit “oddly relevant” to that…

It feels like the hardest lessons to learn are, somehow, the easiest to state. Life is so complicated by the human frameworks we've become entrenched in that finding a level of peace seems an impossibility. There is refuge in the thought that letting go of the struggles, letting go of the complexities we allow ourselves to be twisted up in, will lead to the peace we're all "struggling" for. Thank you for reading and have the most outstanding of days!
Rarest of Moments: Neither Apart from Nor Together With Anything Else
Lia Purpura, Alan Watts, Robert Frost: 'Rarest of Moments: Neither Apart from Nor Together With Anything Else'
[Photos: “Life Story in Wood, #2 (Color and Black-and-White),” by John E. Simpson. (Shared here under a Creative Commons License; for more information, see this page at RAMH.)] This week, whiskey river tossed me a lovely poem which engendered a cascade of thought. And because cascades of almost anything — especially thought — are better when shared with (off-loaded onto?) others, I thought I’d…
