Because I just found out that in addition to whale watching tours, there's such things as seal watching tours, I'm thinking about WTTHB. To ask about backstory: why was it snowboarding that Tom got into in college to keep getting the magazine? Was there an equal chance it could've been some other sport like fencing or track and field?

To be fair, this is a little informed by my own experience as a townie at the base of a ski mountain, but there’s this whole class of rich people that describe themselves as “comfortable” who drop a college tuition’s worth of money on season lift tickets for the family and equipment every year or two. I explore it more in this next chapter, but with Tom’s more affluent upbringing, the idea of him having gone to the mountains to ski growing up, and then as snowboarding grew in popularity in the 80’s, I could see him getting into it as a way to feel connected to his family on the opposite coast while he was in college in Boston.
Mostly it was informed by the rich guys I know who don’t view it as a rich guy sport but. Kinda is.
Slice in WTTHB is genuinely plausible; if you told me they had a one night stand they never talk about, or a friends with benefits situation, I'd buy it without any hesitation.
