after finishing zeekerss' new game Welcome to the Dark Place i decided to draw the description of a poster I found somewhere...
BENCH. There's a short, red, wooden bench here at the edge of the trail to the north. There's a potted fern on it, scooted all the way to the left where it looks like it might fall.
the ocean murders a flock of anything it wants
hi cookie I’m glad u liked my Upturned ramble :D tbh forgot I made that post, I almost want to redo an Upturned analysis now since I feel like I can flesh out my thoughts even more with a few months to sit on the game. I wish more ppl looked into Zeekerss’ work outside of Lethal Company bc The Upturned is one of the most thought-provoking games I’ve played. It feels so mature and wise for a young solo game dev lol; it totally deserves a larger fanbase and I’m always glad to see more ppl diving into it
if you have any other thoughts about the game I’d love to hear about ‘em. Also we Love Shrimp <3
what better time to finally answer this than after i finish Welcome To The Dark Place, lol. vague spoilers for that ahead... if it's something you haven't already finished or care about seeing
i have been immensely enjoying Zeekerss' repeating themes of hope despite the odds and confronting the insurmountable. it's such an interesting thing to see continuously explored in different ways, and i could probably think of a good example of it for all of their games (aside from Dead Seater maybe). Lethal Company is still in the works, of course, but the shared phrase of "there is no way out / there is only further in" between it and It Steals (along with the patreon post about its ending) definitely signals for good things. and then there is Welcome To The Dark Place and The Upturned.
i feel like these two games share a lot in terms of their message and questions it asks the player. what happens after death? will we ever really know that? and are you brave enough to confront it regardless? it makes sense given what Zeekerss has said about development of WTTDP leading to ideas explored in Upturned. both very surreal experiences not fully grounded in reality, that contain just faint hints of a life once lived.
i just really love how hopeful these games are, even if they don't promise things will be okay. even if things are scary and continue to be scary and unknown, there is still something beyond that you need to confront. something in the darkness.
only sort of related, but i think a lot about a phrase written on a wall in Upturned... don't remember it fully but it was something along the lines of "a fool can only tell scary stories". it really drove the context for me throughout the game (and most of Zeekerss' stuff, tbh) and made it really stand out to me. basically it was great, Upturned was great, WTTDP was great. loved it a lot

i haven't really drawn anything in a while, or at least anything i'm happy with, but i know i'm a perfectionist so i decided fuck it, i'm going to draw something and post it even if i hate it
Wow this forest looks interesting
Why are the trees aligned
Got jumpscared by this guy suddenly having a name. Charlie never introduced himself. Not too much of an oversight, his name could have easily been read off the envelopes, but it's the only 'error', I guess, I've found so far
Also, Butter :(
