"now entering the rink, l/n y/n, representing japan!" the announcer called over the loud speaker. the chill from the air on the rink made the hair on your arm stick straight up. you could feel the air nipping at your neck mainly because of the tight bun that your hair was pulled into. you swore your stylist had to have been having a bad day.
gliding onto the rink, you turn to wave at everyone, looking into the box where your coach was, and there he was. ushijima.
"oh! hey..." you say shyly. he pulls you in a quiet hug, no words, like always, "good luck out there." his voice was steady, a small grin tugging at his lips. "i would kiss you but you need to look perfect, not that you don't do that naturally." a blush creeping to his neck and yours. his voice always calmed you. you took some time to just admire him. the buzzer sounded for you to take the ice, breaking you from the trance he had you in.
with the music starting, this was your craft.
it was a song of the love you and ushijima had crafted over the years. romeo and juliet's love theme. while your mother and father approved of him, and his parents of you, it felt almost like your sports wanted to keep you separated.
figure skating was a way that you expressed all of your emotion, the way volleyball was for ushijima.
the hours you poured into this sport could only be rivaled by the intensity of volleyball for your boyfriend.
your program this time was a ghost duet, a way for you to dance alone but in some cases it looked like you were dancing with someone else.
ushijima was there by your side from the first time you were rejected from the olympic team, to you placing dead last, and now. you were a silver medalist, and ushijima couldn't be prouder.
the two of you met in middle school. tendō dragging ushijima to the ice rink for some much needed "no-volleyball hour" as tendō put it.
you had been in the middle of rehearsing, it was nothing flashy, but it was the first performance that you would be submitting for the junior olympics. ushijima found something that day. he found someone that shared a passion that ran so deeply, and while he didn't know it, he met his other half.
you finished your program, tears welling as you landed every single turn and jump. may fans tossing you flowers and stuffed animals onto the ice. you came off the ice, into his arms. there, you waited for the results.
gold. that was a gold medal.
there was no way to beat the near perfect score you received.
he pulled you close in a hug, before pulling you up on his shoulder.
this was love, this was your life, and you wouldn't have it any other way.
the olympics had never even crossed your mind. the timing just happened to line up well. kageyama got his offer for volleyball, the same month you were offered your spot for swimming.
"why...do you look like that?" his head quirked to one side. you're hand was over your mouth, hair still wet from the shower you had taken.
your mouth was still open as you slid your computer over to tobio.
in big letters 'selected' read across the screen. you and him were going to represent japan in the olympics.
"i knew you would be able to." he said it like a fact. to him, it was a fact.
"you're acting like me when i finally passed an english exam." his voice had humor in it, but reassurance that calmed you.
"i knew you would do it." he reached his hand over the table, claiming your fingers with his. this was a big step in your career, but it felt a little bit more doable with him by you side.
humming while waxing your surfboard, you hear footsteps behind you.
"hey, you!" hinata's voice bounced over to you, just as he had. he squatted next to you. his fingers found the strands of hair that fell from your ponytail, pushing them behind your ear. letting his had linger on your jaw, before pulling you into a soft kiss.
pulling back, you look at him like a lovesick teenager.
"nervous?" he asks, hand still on your jaw, his cheeks dusted pink.
"excited." you respond, biting your lip in anticipation.
"good," he pulls your head to his chest, "means you care." he smiled at you.
it was moments like this, the quiet of the waves, the light thump of his heartbeat, this is when everything slowed down. and this is when everything was okay.
standing at the starting blocks and shaking out your muscles, you looked around in the stands. you couldn't find him.
you heard the official call you to your places.
steadying your breathing, you needed to stay focused.
your body lurches forward, feet moving faster than your brain can comprehend.
you knew he was here. he’s been your biggest supporter from the start. he remembers those early mornings when your legs barely obeyed, but you dragged yourself out of bed anyway. the nights when exhaustion crept into your bones, but you kept training until every last fiber screamed for mercy. he was there, eyes bright, never once doubting that you could reach this moment.
he’s seen the countless drills, the slow progression from tentative strides to powerful sprints. every time you stumbled, every cramp that you endured, he witnessed.
you saw the finish line. the air was lighter the closer you got to it.
you could only go, prove everyone else wrong, prove yourself right.
you had won in a landslide.
you kept sprinting, until you saw him. jumping up into his arms as you won, an impressive meter that was between you.
pulling you up in a kiss, he squeezed you.
you had won, in more ways than one.
standing in the corner of the warmup mat, waiting for the next few girls to go. this was your first olympics and you were starting to feel the nerves.
"boo." you hear in your ear, you turn quickly you got a little dizzy. when you realized it was just your boyfriend, your heart slowed a little.
"oh, it's just you." you sighed.
"just me?!" he faked offense.
"yea...just you," you smirked.
"you ready?" he asked, holding your hands in his.
"little nervous..." you admitted, glancing away.
"no need, you're gonna go out there and you're gonna flip and jump and do whatever it is, and your gonna bring home gold!" his voice was so certain. like he knew you could do it.
"okay..." you breathed, he pulled you into a hug, the chalk on your hands brushing onto his jacket.
"okay, well stop moving so much and then i maybe won't pinch you." he deadpanned. to save on costs, hajime was not only a personal trainer for the boys volleyball team, but also the girls.
he was scraping your calves, as you squirmed from pain.
"you could've stretched more," he mumbled.
he always had that no-nonsense way about him—straightforward, serious, but you knew he cared more than he let on. being the trainer for both the boys and girls volleyball teams meant he saw a lot of injuries, a lot of tough days. and he was determined to keep you on the court.
you winced as he worked the muscle, but there was a strange comfort in the way his hands moved—steady, precise, like he knew exactly what you needed.
“you’re lucky i like you,” he muttered under his breath, voice low enough that you almost missed it.
your eyes flicked up, surprised, and for a brief moment, you caught a softness in his usually stern gaze.
“yeah, well, i’m lucky you’re good at this,” you replied with a small smile.
he helped you off the table.
"don't rip a ligament." he said
"no promises!" you said as you hugged him.
pressing a kiss to your forehead, he held you close.
who cared? you had some time to kill.
