Stories choose us. If you try and force a story, you will feel more than writer’s block—you’ll feel writer’s boulder. It’s terrible & I don’t recommend it. Please stop writing to fight against “The Man”—he doesn’t give a sh*t. Please stop writing to impress—they’ll find something to hate anyways. Please don’t feel like you have to write The Immigrant Story or the Politically Correct story if your heart isn’t in it. You have nothing to prove. Get quiet, get honest: What stories do you dream about telling? What book would you be pissed as hell to learn someone else wrote before you? Write that. Flick those dusty “shoulds” from your shoulder and write the story (stories) that chose YOU. There is someone out there who needs to hear and read that story as it comes from YOU. You gotta have faith, my friend. Faith is not just for the religious or the spiritual or the goody two shoes amongst us. Faith is a skill. Especially for those of us who never feel “enough”. We’re the ones know intellectually we’ve done a lot but rarely feel satiated. We have a sort of OCD of the soul, a deep well spring of uncertainty. Faith isn’t reciting affirmations you don’t believe in. Faith isn’t bombastic visualizations and “staying positive” when we feel anything but. Faith is the skill of taking actions, even small action, towards how we wish to feel. Faith is learning to sit with the discomfort of not knowing if things will work out. Faith is becoming comfortable with being a little bit uncomfortable. Faith is a skill you can build over time: You write even when you don’t feel good enough. You sign up for that pole dance class even if you can’t touch your toes. You go on the date even though you’re nervous as f*ck. And you keep showing up, hard days, good days, in between. And you honor all the times you’ve done things without knowing if it will all work out. There is no failure with faith. So when you can: Feel the discomfort. Know that “enough” does not live outside of yourself. Take one step, one new action, one new thought forward. And celebrate yourself! This sh*t isn’t easy! You don’t need a bucketload of confidence—ever. A little faith goes a long way. I am the empress of doubt AND I live by faith every single day. I practice what I preach. Three things to ask a potential #writingcoach (or Empowerment/Clarity Coach) before hiring him or her to help you: ⠀ ⠀ 1. What do you value the most?⠀ ⠀ This is a personal question, but it's one that offers so much value. If you're going to invest in a coach, you'll want to know what he/she cares about, what his/her goals are, and how these personal values will drive the experience. You'll also want to make sure that your vision aligns, as you'll be working together on vulnerable and personal things (even if you're only hiring him/her for business purposes). ⠀ ⠀ 2. What can I expect?⠀ ⠀ Don't be afraid to ask about what sessions will look like, what kind of strategies will be used, and what type of support you'll be given. Some coaches push for independence, some will take you through the process step by step, and some will create a balance that defers to your preference. It's important for you to know before you start so that you know what the sessions will look like, and whether or not they are aligned. ⠀ ⠀ 3. What do I need to prepare? ⠀ ⠀ Before your first session, as your coach what he/she will need. Perhaps it's samples of your work, previous resumes, your social accounts or website URLs, etc. Being prepared will ensure that your coach has ample time to learn about you and better help you, as well as help you get the most from your investment⠀ ⠀ Toying with coaching? Write from the heart. 💗 Have you ever received that advice? Have you ever wondered what it really means?⠀ ⠀ When I first started writing, it was in journals. I would decorate the pages with different-colored gel pens and pictures along the margins. I would tell crazy stories or over-dramatized versions of my real life. I would pen poetry or musings. I filled journal after journal, over 50 200-page books by the time I was fifteen.⠀ ⠀ When I started my blog, Word&Sole the vision was still there. I made a promise to myself that I would write openly, freely. Something I told myself was "No one can read this. I'm going to write to me and no one else." And that's actually the foundation of advice I give to all my #writingcoaching clients. Sometimes you have to pretend you're the only voice in the room.⠀ ⠀ Writing with authenticity, especially in our media-driven world, can be so challenging. It's hard to cut through the noise, hard to determine your own voice, and hard to be open when society seems to push back, misinterpreting vulnerability as weakness.⠀ ⠀ If there's one thing I've learned, though, it's that when we are actively open, when we are vulnerable, transparent, and willing to put our true selves into the world, the world opens. ⠀ ⠀ One of my most viral quotes is this: "Become the person who is open and soft, not harsh and hidden. And watch how the world opens to you in return." And this rings so true, especially with writing.⠀ ⠀ If you want to be heard, if you want to be respected, if you want to share your heart in a way that's meaningful and carries weight, you have to be willing to put yourself out there.⠀ ⠀ Pretend you're the only one reading. Push away the fear and doubt. Listen to the core of yourself and what's pulsing with purpose. Cut through the noise to identify what resonates. And share. Keep sharing.
