it's incredibly frustrating to see aspiring writers try to take a stance against the "show don't tell" rule as if it's some oppressive shackle that big scary academics are using to prevent writing from being accessible.
first of all, there has never been hard fast rules of writing and good writers know this. it's always dependent on your voice and style and the medium with which you're portraying a medium
secondly, have you never read exposition heavy books or been condescended to by a narrative? it sucks. it is a dead anchor for pacing and enjoyment. "show don't tell" is a failsafe for dry info dumps and bad world building techniques and works to prevent poor reader interactions.
like I saw someone use Shakespeare as an example for why show don't tell doesn't work which is absurd because Shakespeare is a playwright not just some novelist. that means it is for visual mediums and during a time that has more technological restraints which affect storytelling. also he does it in a clever self referential way that incorporates audience participation.
"show don't tell" is a good jumping off point and if you find your style allows for clever exposition you can clearly toss that out the window and I promise an english professor is not going to break your door down to shame you.
