One of the biggest questions floating around the wrestling fan community since the big betrayal of one member of The Shield on Monday night has been "Why Seth?" In some cases it has been indignant, as in "Why, Seth, Why? Why did you do it?" The heartbreak among wrestling fans is widespread. Other times it has been "Why did they pick Seth Rollins to break out and turn on his partners?" The argument is if one member of the Shield is going to turn, Dean Ambrose is the more natural heel, the better talker, and the one that would easily make the fans buy it and hate him. Furthermore, Evolution has always been about the stars of the past and present lifting up the stars of the future, and the company has pretty clearly handpicked Roman Reigns as that golden boy. Those are exactly the reasons it had to be Seth. Seth is obviously a talented, charismatic wrestler, and he played an important role in The Shield. Dean is great at selling and talking, and can break out as an in-ring star given the chance. The frantic, brawling style he's been using hasn't given him the breakout opportunity yet. Roman is your hoss, one of the best hot tags in wrestling right now, and naturally charismatic. Roman is also the greenest of the three, and for most of The Shield's existence has not been able to be trusted to carry a match by himself. Essentially, this put Seth in the position of holding the group, and their matches, together. In between the ropes Rollins is probably the most well-rounded of the three (although an argument could be made for Ambrose). He can work, draw heat, is amazing with his high spots and just generally has fantastic timing. Seth Rollins was (again, talking about in-ring work only) the glue of The Shield. Without him, the formula would not have worked as fabulously as it has for the past year-and-a-half. However, despite his amazing high spots, he's always the third person in the conversation. "Reigns is the hoss, Ambrose is amazing on the microphone, and Rollins flies around and sells like Dolph Ziggler had a love child with a Game Genie." If the Shield were a sentence, Roman Reigns is the subject, Dean Ambrose is the predicate and Seth Rollins is the punctuation. Intrinsic, but rarely what you notice. Which is why Seth Rollins is the perfect choice to turn on his partners and join Evolution. Not only because it gives him the opportunity to complain about how he never got the glory or the attention he deserved, but because he wasn't the guy people expected. The Shield breaking up sooner rather than later was a foregone conclusion. People thought Roman Reigns would stake out on his own for all the glory. Thought Dean Ambrose would betray his partners in some slimy, underhanded way. Seth Rollins beating the living mess out of his partners with a chair and joining Evolution? Nobody saw it coming. That's why people were so upset, and why when Seth is winding up with the chair to nail Roman the first time you hear a fan screaming "NOOOOOO!!!" That's the ultimate betrayal in an environment when wrestling fans think they know everything. Everybody knows that no team or faction is going to last forever, and many pride themselves on thinking they have it figured out. You want to make wrestling fans feel betrayed and heartbroken? Do the one thing the fans have not thought of and make it make more sense than everything they have thought of. That's what WWE pulled off this week with The Shield and Evolution. And that's why it has to be Seth Rollins.
