#StoryOfAGif | Jane & Wounda
We all have seen around this beautiful gif that makes almost everyone AWW! but not many know the story behind it. I am sure some or many of you now who Jane Goodall is…. This magnificent conservationist lady is an expert primatologist who had lived more than 55 years in the jungle and revolutionised our knowledge of chimpanzee behaviour.
The gif tell us the story of Wounda being released onto Tchindzoulou Island (Republic of Congo) in 2013.
Dr. Jane Goodall discovered chimpanzees are so like us; complex and intelligent beings sharing much of our emotions like fear, compassion, and love. When considering these traits, one chimpanzee in particular stands out: Her name is Wounda (meaning “Close to Death”)
Here is a beautiful clip where Dr Goodall reminiscences herself about that special moment…Enjoy!
Jane Goodall & Wounda - The Hug
This clip is from 2013. I’ve seen it several times since then and it always gets me teary. The chimp is named Wounda. She was near death and was gradually brought back to health at Goodall’s Sanctuary. This video was part of a longer feature that documented Wounda’s journey to her new home on an island. The hug gets me every time.

the Jane Goodall Institute
This amazing video documents the story of Wounda, one of the more than 160 chimpanzees living at the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo.
Thanks to the expert care provided at Tchimpounga, Wounda overcame significant adversity and illness and was recently relocated to…
