"This is your temple." February 1, 2014
At night, the Golden Temple looked like a magical kingdom out of a dream or a fairy tale.
This man came up to Kirsten and me, exclaiming that within the Temple, everyone is united and equal. He also asked if we were married or planning to get married - “Happy wife, happy life,” but that’s a story for another blog post.
We had dinner in this huge communal dining hall; I just felt this enormous sense of unity and community. The Sikh religion welcomes, feeds, and shelters anyone and everyone who pilgrimages to the holy site. It’s amazing how many people they feed each night - around 60~100,000. For some reason, it reminded me of a Vonnegut quote: "When food came in, the human beings were quiet and trusting and beautiful. They shared."
