Before I get into this rant let me put a disclaimer that I respect all religions and although I align myself more with Christianity I don't identify with any specific religion. I respect agnostic and atheist people.
You know what I don't respect? People who say no religions are real and that all religions are opressive cults. To say all religions are opressive you'd have to include Wicca, all branches of Paganism, Buddhism, Taoism, ancient religions and spiritual beliefs etc. To deny religion is to deny anthropology and history, people have been believing in higher powers since the beginning of society. Without the tenets of helping the poor and healing the sick in Christianity a lot of hospitals and orphanages wouldn't be founded in the west. The Islamic Golden Age advanced science and math (if anyone knows more about this please fact check me). It also tells me you know very little about cults because not all cults are based in religion. And accusing every single religious person of being in a cult is very tone deaf to actual cult survivors.
Is it terrible that people have been forcibly converted to different religions historically and currently? Yes. Have people used their religion to inflict violence on others? Yes. Has organized religion done harm? Yes. But it's also done a lot of good.
I also hate the idea that if someone suddenly turns to religion they either did something bad or are in religious psychosis. For one, religious psychosis is a very specific and dangerous thing. Second, if following a religion is what makes someone more forgiving, compassionate and guides their morals, that's a good thing!
People aren't going to stop being religious anytime soon, it costs nothing to respect others
