First Worlder (Summoner Archetype)
I’ve mentioned on the blog before how the general headcanon of the source of eidolons is generally varied. (Though the original synopsis of the class feature does paint them as being aspects of greater outsiders, most people ignore that as the end-all, be-all explanation, because its more fun that way.) Today’s archetype is the first to genuinely guarantee a source for the eidolons granted by it. (Even the blood god disciple leaves room for ambivalence if the eidolon actually is connected to any deity.)
The summoner archetype we’re looking at today draws upon the First World, or whatever your setting calls the home of the fae, and they can all upon the wild powers of nature, and an eidolon fae spirit to aid them whenever they might need it.
Like all summoners, these mages may call upon a reserve of energy outside of their spells to conjure up long-lasting allies. However, the creatures they summon are from the natural world, rather than from the outer planes, and they add several types of fae and sylvan creatures to the list of possible natural allies they have access to.
The largest difference lies with their eidolon, which is drawn from the fae realms, possibly as a dreamed-up creature or a reflection of a primal form from those wild places. Its nature as a fae, however, makes it physically weaker, but also more agile and more skilled than their outsider counterparts. Furthermore, when evolved to resist damage, they can opt to make cold iron the bypassing form of damage, rather than a specific alignment.
For the most part, these summoners play much like their normal counterparts. However, the balance of having a summon list focused on animals, plants, elementals, and fae does shift their balance a bit. The reduced hit points also pushes the player towards making the eidolon something other than a battle-ready close-combat specialist, possibly taking up a support role in the party.
As our first non-racial archetype (Goodness, we did just go through a lot of those, didn’t we?) I don’t have to do the “Its for this race BUT” part today, and honestly, I kinda miss it after doing it for a week straight. Ah well, its not like there’s any shortage of racial archetypes down the road.
Anyway, these first worlders are much like their outsider-focused cousins, but perhaps a bit ballsier, after all, with outsiders, you know how to predict their behavior. With fae, you never know what to expect from them until its too late.
Seirva is well-reknowned as a local druid mystic and the slayer of the Bone-Eater ogre tribe. He travels everywhere with her dryad companion, who she claims she bonded to her living oak staff. In truth, she is a first-world summoner, but she perpetuates the image due to the negative view arcane magic has taken on in recent years.
Recent reports have claimed that a dragon youngling has been spotted in the nearby hills of Travista, sparking wave after wave of dragonslayers looking to profit from the bevy of magical reagents its body contains. However, it always seems to vanish before the killing blow, only to reappear days later. Meanwhile, a very disgruntled gnome has begun asking around why people keep attacking his jabberwock-like eidolon.
Varish is very proud of his eidolon, a perfectly sculpted representation of the nagaji spirit of the first hydra. However, due to a fluke of its fae nature, each of the heads has a different personality, and only cease to bicker whenever combat forces them to work together, resuming their argument when finished.
