Becalmed Grace #travel #japan #geishas #gion #kyoto Shirakawa Dori is my favourite street in Gion and Kyoto for that matter. You have the old architecture, no power lines, the cobblestones and the river. Each time the breeze picks up gusts of sakura petals flutter past you like snowflakes. Its picturesque no doubt about it. Killing time before riding to my next destination I weaved through the numerous wedding shoots and tourists, just taking it in. Somehow I managed to find myself on the pedestrian bridge at the intersection with Shinbashi Dori, surrounded by an enormous crowd of people all with cameras and phones snapping like mad. Beside me two Geisha staring down the business ends of all those cameras. A couple of people moved the wrong way and the Geisha were split, one beside me and the other now the sole attention of the mob. It was surreal. Like when the wind dies down suddenly and you become very aware of how still and quiet everything is. Separated from everyone else we looked at each other, smiled and she started posing for me. I gave slight directions, focused manually and carefully took 4 photos. This was my favourite moment on this trip. It lasted all of 5 minutes before she was swallowed up by the mob again but I had the chance to show her the result before that happened. Out of all my photos taken to date I only like about 7 of them.
