Update on the progress of my work
I am currently, working with the children’s book The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis; a book in which the narrative and themes are very ‘visual’. I work in a traditional manner, preferring to create an assortment of preliminary sketches (often too many) in my preferred medium – pen and ink. However, I have found my recent life drawing classes incredibly valuable as it has brought me into contact with a range of different media, many of which I am currently using. Before this project I released I needed to scale up my work, not only for my portfolio but as a way to progress my interest in product and set design. As a result, I researched Andrea Dezso, who creates small sets whilst mainly employing a dark colour scheme, something I can use in my intended final piece: a layered stencil design created with a montage of pivotal moments and characters in the book – as I intend to create the illusion of depth. I tried creating this depth firstly by layering tracing paper with images, then after working on Adobe Premier Pro I managed to project my images onto two white boards. By combining the projected images with an actor I was able to propose the drawings as scaled up theatre flats, allowing these images to work with props, which coupled with coloured lighting, helped emphasise the cold feel of Narnia. I decided to diverge and look at combining another element into my work, after being inspired by the idea of a popup book (and Lian Ng). However, a craft knife did not achieve the crisp edges I truly desired so I am now developing outcomes using a laser cutter on any final designs. I think that the challenge I face is finish in terms of both scale and professional output. I believe that I am solving these problems and that the potential of my work is emerging.
