Draft of Chapter Two: Ophelia & Asher’s Story
Upon entering her room to change, Ophelia walked to the window to take in the view of the rolling hills and trees beyond the manor. The sky was a gorgeous bright blue with a few wisps of white clouds here and there. She was dying to get out to the stables and ride. “Well would you look at this, miss! Haven’t seen this get-up in an age. You made quite a scene riding about in these clothes the…

Draft of Chapter One: Ophelia & Asher’s Story
Draft of Chapter One: Ophelia & Asher’s Story
Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England September 1893 Wiggs, the usually calm and stately butler, came running down the steps to meet Asher as he rode up to Woodclyffe Manor. “Welcome home Master Asher! I beg your pardon, Lord Wyndclyffe,” he bowed low, showing Asher Hammersleigh, the new Earl of Wyndclyffe, his due respect. Exhausted from the day and a half ride from London, Asher Hammersleigh,…

I was talking to a French friend about politics there and here and general philosophical nonsense (he went to the sorbonne, student socialist, passingly familiar with poststructuralist theory because it’s more in the air ((described Deleuze as the guy who’s like, the guy you choose if you want to be an edgy freshman haha)) but trained in the classics and now some kind of analytical logic chopper) but it occurred to me that perhaps there’s something we’ve missed in the tensions between postmodernist critique and post structuralist theory because we haven’t adequately historicized or contextualized their uptake in the American university.
I’m still sketching it out and it might be a false start but like, what my french friend made me realize is all these authors came from a context where marxist work, class struggle politics, and explicit revolutionary or insurrectionary activity was very much present and explicit. The criticisms they put onto those movements came from a proximity and from being in that milieu, but I’ve not seen a lot I’d call explicitly or necessarily anti marxist in the fullest sense, and things in both that would seem to play nicely with each other given the right working. I recall Foucault saying something (in a foreward to a work for Deleuze and Guattari, either for Anti Oedipus or a collection of essays) “if you want a theory of money look no farther than marx”, for example. Not to say they line up, just that the opposition I’ve seen doesn’t hold up in text.
But in the US, the process of discourse uptake happened in places where there was no such milieu, and it happened in conjunction with cold war politics. like the establishment of a sort of Derridean literati in the 80s and the dawn of the neoliberal era. I can’t help but feel that must have also shaped the way those works took shape and what class got to employ them. Whatever tension I’m seeing in classical marxist politics and post structuralist workings, I know some of it is legitimately theoretical, but I think this has to be a contributing factor on the political field.
In the US, these discourses were taken up in a society with the
Like I don’t think in my reading of this like, loose association of theorists, I’ve come across a lot that was explicitly anti-Marxist in the strictest sense, or rejecting of those modes of critique.
