Trying to find that delicate balance of “yes I know” and “I can’t do that” at work so that they know that I’m competent, but not so competent they ask me to do work I’m not getting paid for.

How did people write War and Peace or Hunchback of Notre Dame or even Lord of the Rings before computers to save and back up your manuscript? Did you just spend 429 hours chick-chak-ding-schwrrting away at a typewriter hoping your cat didn’t knock over your coffee onto your life’s work? I know there was carbon paper so copies could be punched, but that’s a max of like what, three? and what about the first draft, are you gonna make multiple copies of that? carbon paper ain’t cheap and Hugo had bitches to fuck, y’know. This is just about the typewriter era, because I feel like your hand-written drafts in the pages of a notebook or journal would be safer because at least the cover would protect against some harm (unless you’re writing on loose-leaf paper like a maniac which, to be fair, you probably were because there was lead in everything and everyone was dying of tuberculosis or syphilis).
