WordPress 7 Is the Most Significant Release in Over a Decade
WordPress 7.0 "Armstrong," released May 20, 2026, is the most structurally significant WordPress release in years. It introduces native AI infrastructure into the core via the WP AI Client and Abilities API, allowing WordPress to communicate with external AI models (OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic) through a centralized Connectors screen. The admin dashboard receives its first major overhaul since 2013, including the React-based DataViews component, a Command Palette (⌘K), a dedicated Fonts page, and smooth view transitions. New blocks include a native Icons block, a Breadcrumbs block, video backgrounds for the Cover block, and responsive block visibility controls. PHP-only block registration simplifies developer workflows. Real-time collaboration—the flagship Phase 3 feature—was pulled from the release due to unresolved architectural concerns around race conditions and server load. WordPress 7.1 follows in August 2026, with RTC realistically targeting WordPress 7.3 in 2027.
