so it goes like this:  the lot of us, knee to knee at a picnic table, hands pink from  brisk morning, mouths cold and teething. we crisp lettuce and bread into tomato soft collages and split them between our neighbours. next to us hums the river, placid under the sun. and in the evening light, everything is pink and not quite sad. we’ll go home to our dogs and sleep with our hands clasped over our bellies until the sun makes the morning again.
