Here is a little bolero jacket I made last year and never posted. Made from vintage Chinese, Thai and Japanese fabric. The chest and back are some Thai indigo fabric I got in Chaing Mai 10 years ago. The collar and sleeves were dead stock uncut Japanese maekake apron fabric. I left the fringe from the aprons on the cuffs as I thought it looked rad. The interior is vintage 50’s/60’s cloth from Hong Kong apparently it wS popularly used for women’s dresses. This is a slightly modified vintage Japanese kimono jacket designed to offer a roomier fit. The bright and bold golden yellow color on this silk jacket is quite unusual. And the layered design work is fantastic: the silk is a woven jacquard of little overlapping squares that shimmer in the light, and then a layer of mottled, shadowy shibori dye work, and on the surface are long brushstrokes in yellow. Each Japanique Jacket starts out as a vintage michiyuki, which is a narrow jacket with snap closures meant to be worn on top of a kimono. Most vintage michiyuki won't fit larger frames, so we modified the traditional garment slightly (removed the snaps and tacked the panels back to create lapels) to make a roomier, open, flowing jacket that can fit sizes 12-18.

This design looks to us to like the paving stone pathways that lead one through a Japanese garden. Some of the stone shapes feature pine boughs in a sky blue; in others you'll find yellow overlapping wave (saigaiha) patterning as well as bamboo and florals. Between the stones the background color varies from berry to pink. All of the design was created with various sizes and shapes of shibori binding.Square neck line, inner ties to keep the hemline straight, and a hidden pocket on the right front panel (see green feathered tuft tucked in the pocket in one of the photos.) Michiyuki were worn over the kimono (which showed at the neck) on chilly days. Michi means "street" and yuki refers to "going out".
